OW Youth Gunned Down

Derrick Romero

A mid-morning murder in Sugar City has left family and friends stunned and Orange Walk police none the wiser as to a motive for the fatal shooting.  Shortly before eleven o’clock this morning, eighteen-year-old Derrick Romero became the fifth murder victim since the beginning of the year in Orange Walk Town. He was along with a group of friends at his residence when he came under attack from a lone gunman.  A salvo of nine millimeter rounds was fired in his direction and when the gunfire subsided, Romero lay mortally wounded inside his yard.  Despite efforts to rush him to the local hospital, he would succumb to his injuries less than an hour later.  While investigators are still conducting an inquest into the latest homicide, the possibility of it being a gang related hit has not been ruled out.  This afternoon, Assistant Superintendent Selvyn Tillett, during a press briefing, shared details of a preliminary investigation.

“At ten-forty-five a.m., acting upon information, police visited the Northern Regional Hospital where they saw one Derrick Romero, eighteen-years-old Belizean unemployed of number five Sittee River Street, Orange Walk Town suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper left shoulder, to his abdomen, center of back, as well as the back of his neck.  At eleven-seventeen this morning Derrick Romero passed away.  Initial investigation revealed that sometime around or after ten this morning, Derrick was along with other male persons in his yard and a male person riding a bicycle passed by and shot at Mr. Romero.  No one else was injured.”

“There is a report from a witness saying that the individual came over to the house and bought drugs.  Do you know if that house sells drugs?”

ASP Selvyn Tillett

“As I said, we are looking at all angles and we cannot say as we are still investigating this issue.”

Reporter

“Do you attribute this to gang activity?”

ASP Selvyn Tillett

“I cannot say, we’re still investigating.”
