Attorney Says Police Beat Up San Pedro Murder Suspect

The murder of a cab driver in San Pedro last week has brought the police department under intense public scrutiny yet again for alleged use of excessive force.  Twenty-three-year-old Luis Campos was a person of interest in the grisly homicide of Jose Beltran who was found dead inside his vehicle in a remote location on the island.  Beltran had been shot once to the head.  In the wake of the murder, police launched an operation in which Campos was sought as a suspect.  When he was taken into custody, he was reportedly transported to the northern part of the island where he was allegedly physically abused by the arresting officers.  To make matters worse, Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster who was recently transferred to the island is being accused of orchestrating the beating that Campos endured while in police custody.  This afternoon, attorney Oscar Selgado told News Five that he was prevented from seeing his client when Campos was slipped out of the holding cell last Wednesday and spirited to an undisclosed location where he was badly beaten.

“Last Wednesday, the twenty-ninth of April, at around two p.m., I was called out to San Pedro by my clients, the Campos family.  The reason for that is because Luis Campos was detained by police, the unit headed by Mr. Broaster, Senior Superintendent Broaster.  Again, [he] went to San Pedro reacting to a murder, an alleged murder that took place on the island [where] a taxi man was found on one tip of San Pedro murdered inside his van.  My client, Luis Campos, was a person of interest by the police.  Mr. Broaster himself, entered into the Campos’ residence at the San Juan area, the home of Moses Campos Senior and demanded that Luis Campos be handed over to the police.  The house was searched and Luis Campos was not found.  However, a younger brother was seen in the house and Mr. Broaster made the comment to Moses Campos that if that was Luis Campos, “I would have shot him in your presence and you would not have been able to do anything about it because he is a murderer and he is wanted by the police for murder.”  When my client relayed that sort of information to me, it angered me because I have been to the media before, I have spoken to Mr. Broaster himself before, I have spoken to the Commissioner of Police, I have spoken to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in regards to the police’s use of unjustifiable force in getting information from citizens and this was another incident.  My client Luis Campos was eventually found by Mr. Broaster and his team and he was taken to an area north of San Pedro where he was severely beaten by the police.  I am informed that the police took a sponge, a foam, what we call a mattress, piece of a mattress and they wrapped it around him and they beat him on his hands, his chest, his back.  He was kicked on his face several times, he wore braces and the braces cut the internal part of his mouth, all under his lips.  His eyes were bloodshot red because he was pepper sprayed.  His face was severely swollen.”
