Travis Polanco Taken Off Life Support

Thomas Polanco

The family of six year old Travis Polanco from Pomona Valley, Stann Creek District, is tonight grieving his death, five days after he was shot to the head by another primary school student. At three minutes past twelve this afternoon, the young boy who had been unresponsive for some days, was taken off the ventilator at the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Close relatives and friends gathered outside the hospital this morning as Gurdy Bahadur and Thomas Polanco would muster the strength and take the bold decision after doctors told them there was nothing more they could do for Travis. As we told you on Monday’s newscast, the six year old was home from school last Thursday, reportedly playing with a friend, whose confirmed age is eleven. Just before five p.m. that day, the older boy retrieved his father’s shotgun and fired a single blast at Travis from a window. Travis was hit to the right side of the head, the nose and the cheek and was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital and then on to the K.H.M.H., but lost his fight for life today. The incident has crushed the family because just five years ago, in May of 2009, Travis’ older brother, who was also six at the time, lost his life when he drowned in the south. The grieving family is coming to terms with the death of their own.

“Do you think that this was all just an accident like some people are saying?”

Gurly Bahadur

Gurly Bahadur

“I noh call this accident because like weh I tell you, why di father left the gun ina the house for? The lee bwai know what he mi di do because they mi di play earlier. What caused him to just run ina di house, hold the gun?”

Duane Moody

“I’m understanding that this is not the first loss in the family…”

Gurly Bahadur

“No…five years ago, I lost one of my sons and this is just in the space of five years, same month…just because it is a different date.”
