Hattieville Youth Dies After Agric Stabbing

Dernel Brown

The national agricultural and trade show was held over the holiday weekend in the Capital….thousands turned out for the event; that story is coming later in the newscast. But on Saturday night at the show grounds, a Hattieville youth was stabbed to death. Twenty-four year old Dernel Brown was socializing with a group of friends when he was attacked by at least three persons. One pulled out a knife and jammed it into the right side of his head, and despite all efforts to save his life; he succumbed around nine this morning at the K.H.M.H. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

As the festivities at the national agricultural and trade show grounds were winding down on Saturday night, tragedy struck. Around ten-thirty that night as the highly anticipated boxing match was being watched by many across the Jewel, Hattieville resident, twenty-four year old Dernel Brown, was stabbed to the right side of the head with a knife. He was embroiled in a fight when he was injured.

“It happened on the show grounds itself. A male person, Darnell Brown, twenty-four years of Hattieville village, was there socializing when a fight erupted between himself and three other persons. During the altercation, Mister Brown received a stab wound to the head and he was taken to the Western regional Hospital.”

Brown was taken to the Western Regional Hospital before he was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a critical condition and with the knife still lodged in his head. Within a day and a half, Brown passed away this morning around nine o’clock. His father would wait anxiously at the Accident and Emergency Unit for his arrival.

Horace Brown

“One ah mi step sons call me and tell me weh gone on and they tell me that I need to go to the hospital because dehn di bring down my son with a knife stuck in his head.”

Duane Moody

“What did you see when you reached the hospital?”

But with the newly installed police booth at the show grounds with numerous officers on duty, police were quick to respond to the incident and were able to detain one of the three men involved in the stabbing.

“We have one person in custody, Kimal Dawson and we are seeking Dean Galvez known as “Paradise” and Shariff Anderson Andrewin of Cotton Tree; Dean Galvez is from Roaring Creek. We are seeking these two others and we believe that we have sufficient information to charge three persons in relation to this incident.”

For Horace Brown, however, it is yet another loss to his family since his wife’s passing, one year ago, in 2014. He says that Dernel, who is his eldest son, was living in Teakettle for the past two months with his step-brother.

Horace Brown

“He lately gone up there mussi like wah month or two months ago with ih bredda because ih bredda live dah Teakettle.”

Duane Moody

“So he has been living in Teakettle for that time?”

Horace Brown

“Yeah.”

Duane Moody

“Other than that, you don’t know whether he has beef with anybody because we understand that these persons are from Roaring Creek?”

This is a sad story. Regardless if he was a good or not-so-good person, he was still a young boy who had his family that love and care about him. He still had a lot more years to come. With that said, my condolences goes with his family.
