P.U.P. Mourns Former Mayor David Fonseca

David Fonseca

The tragic suicide of former Belize City Mayor David Fonseca continues to rock family and friends, as well as colleagues in the political sphere.  Fonseca took his own life on Thursday afternoon inside the family’s residence in Stuart’s Alley when he turned a handgun on himself.  What precipitated this tragedy remains uncertain, however, funeral will be held on Wednesday.  Earlier today, the Belize City Council issued a release expressing condolences to the Fonseca family.  This morning, Leader of the Opposition Francis Fonseca, a close relative of the fallen businessman, spoke briefly on the misfortune.

Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition

“Dave is my cousin, my friend but, you know, I see him occasionally and I never certainly, never had any indication that he was depressed.  I knew that the last time I saw him he was talking about the big Mayweather/Pacquiao fight and about watching that fight Saturday night, you know, and about celebrating his birthday.  His birthday was May first, the day after he took his own life.  So, as I said, it’s always difficult, it’s always difficult to understand and to explain these things and the truth is you can’t, you can’t understand, you can’t explain and you can’t judge.  All you have to do is, as I said earlier, place yourselves in God’s hands and, you know, seek comfort from other people and that is what we have been very grateful for as a family, the tremendous outpouring of support and comfort coming from so many people across the country.  We’re very grateful for that.”

“My understanding is that the funeral will take place on Wednesday but I can’t give you details beyond that.”

David Fonseca was the first elected Mayor of Belize City and President of the Mayors Association. He served two terms as mayor and a total of sixteen years in active politics.
