Basketball and Football in Sports Monday

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The Dangriga Warriors hosted the defending champion, San Pedro Tiger Sharks in its bid to make the post season and it turned out to be a master inside the Ecumenical High School Gymnasium. Powered by the home cooking, the Warriors get off to a good start early. Edgar Mitchell knives through traffic, changes hands in the air and sinks 2 of his 13 game points. Mitchell then dishes off to Brandon Flowers who raises up in traffic and would have a super outing tonight. At the end of 1 the home team leads 17 to 15. However, in the 2nd quarter, the Tiger Sharks go to work. Raul Roches muscles his way down low to get 2 of his 10 game points. Meanwhile, the hammer comes down when Darwin Leslie deals to Milton James who would possess the only 2 doubles of the night of 23 pts and the game high 13 rebounds. Roches looks for the assist when he dishes to Milton James; he doesn’t disappoint and gets 2 more. The American would also achieve the highest efficiency rating of the outing with 28. The brother to brother connection kicks in when Tyrone Edwards hooks up with Ashton Edwards who lands the triple for 3 of his 14 pts. The Tiger Sharks would go on a 17 to 7 run to post a 45 to 30 lead at the half. Into the 3rd, Darwin Leslie throws up this beauty as the visitors continue the torrid pace. The lead is 21 when the Warriors make a move—Mitchell finds the go by guy, Brandon Flowers who raises up for 3. Daniel Nolberto attacks down the baseline and he strikes for 2 of his 20 game points to go along with 6 assists. But back to the Brandon Flowers show, as he handles the long distance pass to put up 2 more points. Flowers would finish with the game high 25 pts and would pull down 6 rebounds. At the end of 3rd, Griga is only down.

When this 2 man game between Nolberto and Flowers works to perfection, the Warriors find themselves only down by 3 with 7:40 remaining in the ballgame. Make it a 1 pts game when Mitchell winds his way through traffic and could have tied the ballgame but misses the free throw. Folks we’re tied at 79 each in a heated ballgame when Darwin Leslie gets a trip to the charity stripe. He would sink both to finish 12 for 12 from the line and guess what, the San Pedro defense kicks in to take the win in an 81 to 79 final score. In other action around the league, Belize City No Limit handed Cay Western Ballaz its 3 lost in a 77 to 66 score; Belmopan Red Taigaz ran over the Running Rebels 75 to 70. Thus San Pedro, Western Ballaz and Belmopan Taigaz now show 7 wins 3 losses while Dangriga and Belize City No Limit are currently settling for 4th playoff spot with 5 wins 6 losses a piece.

In cycling news, Belizean cyclist dominated the Cozumel Road Race at Mexico over the weekend. Brandon Cattouse and Byron Pope took the 1st and 2nd place in the 60 mile road race. At the U-23 class, Giovanni Lovell and Delawn Abraham finished 1st and 2nd respectively. Ray Cattouse won the Master’s B Class 45 mile ride and Isaiah Williams took 4th. While Kaya Cattouse won the female 35 mile.

Turning to the football scene, the B.D.F. might have marched into controversy over the last 2 PLB matches. On Wednesday night, the B.D.F. feel 6-nill to Verdes FC at the F.F.B. field so we join them for yesterday’s rematch at the Norman Broaster stadium. The 1st attempt at goal comes from the military—Carlton Thomas sets table for Leon Cadle who finds himself unable to launch. Then Osmar Duran comes up firing blanks on 2 attempts from point blank range. At the other end, Najib Guerra looks for the opener from long distance. Tevin Gamboa denies him access to the net. Jamil Cano then tries the left foot inside the box that screams over the cross bar. Vallan Symms then triggers this set piece but Benito Morriera comes up with an impressive save. Symms, the stopper for the B.D.F. does get his hands on this ball and the referee rules penalty. Rodney Pacheco steps and steers Tevin Gamboa the wrong way as Verdes takes a 1-zip lead into intermission. Some 15 minutes into 2nd half, Orlando Jimenez fires this left foot that makes it a 2-0 lead for Verdes. 4 minutes later, this right away pass from David Trapp drops perfectly for Jamil Cano who scores the 3rd Verdes goal. This might look easy, but it counts when Marlon Molina fires it into the goal to make it 4-nil. Marlon Molina then gets this nice touch from Najib Guerra and jut like that, it’s 5-zip. Hey folks, the military gets a penalty call; James Flores steps up and is denied by Senor Benito Morriera. The B.D.F.’s sole goal comes off this struggle for possession between Leon Cadle and Benito Morriera; Edgar Adderley streaks in to force 5-1 score as the B.D.F. gives up 11 goals in 2 matches against Verdes while scoring 1.

B.D.F. coach, Charlie Slisher has fired off a letter to the F.F.B. accusing some players of match fixing. The F.F.B. is to make an official comment sometime today. Meanwhile, in 2 matches against Belmopan Bandits, the Police settled for a 1-1 draw – one on Wednesday and then they tumbled 2-zip on Saturday. Thus the 2 finalists are Verdes with 11 pts from 6 outings and Belmopan Bandits with 10 from the same number of ball games. The championship round begins Thursday night at the F.F.B. with Belmopan hosting Verdes and the 2 match series concludes on Sunday at the Norman Broaster Stadium.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
