Espat Says G.O.B.’s PR Push is Political Spin

Julius Espat

Espat told News Five that the original rationale behind the Petrocaribe program, conceptualized and implemented by the late President Hugo Chavez, has been bastardized to further the political ambitions of the government of the day.

Julius Espat, Chairman, Public Accounts Committee

“Social projects fostered by the Petrocaribe agreement should empower all people, not only U.D.P.s…I’m putting in that part…all people in these populations to overcome poverty, ensuring availability and access to health, education and micro-financing of cooperatives and small and medium sized enterprises. That’s just a piece of it. Nothing that we are doing with the money right now is based on this. In fact we have rolled back NHI, we don’t have clinics in our villages, I don’t see anything with the expenditure going into better education, nobody understands that under this agreement a regular Belizean can do a proposal to be able to have a project financed. There’s no money spent in agro-productive sector of this country like what is being done in the Caribbean. It says we assert that the Petrocaribe agreement is intended to change Latin America and Caribbean societies by making them fairer. Has the Petrocaribe made our society fairer? More cultured…has the Petrocaribe roll it made our society more cultured? Participative and supportive, and because of this it is regarded as a comprehensive process which promotes eradication of poverty and encourages quality of life and the effective involvement of the people in shaping their destiny. The spirit of our Constitution is there to safeguard the Belizean people. It is there so we can do good for people. It is not there to utilize the people’s money for political spending. And that is our fight. It is a major fight and no spin-master, no Joseph Waight who sadly is a public officer, a senior public servant and no political attorney spin-master can go on the media and defend this because it is indefensible.”

Espat says that the claim which he submitted on behalf of the People’s United Party is what forced the government to come up with the Petrocaribe Bill.
