V.I.P. Demands a Re-registration Exercise

Paco Smith

And finally, the V.I.P. called for a re-registration exercise to clean up voters’ lists which are widely believed to be anything but accurate. It’s an exercise which is a long time in coming, and neither of the mass parties has seemed too adamant about it. But the V.I.P. is…and as they’ve done at every opportunity…they sent out the call with the hope that somebody in authority, somewhere, is listening.

Paco Smith, Candidate, VIP

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the voters’ lists are not clean. They haven’t been sanitized in quite some time. They are bloated. A lot of deceased individuals remain on the list. There are a large number of individuals who actually don’t reside in the areas in which they are registered. And we have seen over the years from successive administrations what I refer to as gerrymandering of the districts, the constituencies. That’s nothing new, but all the same it does not bode well with regards to good governance practices and principles. We all know that constitutionally the next elections should be called by 2017, and amid the current political situation that we face, well you never know. The Prime Minister has the ability to call elections whenever he so chooses. In keeping with that reality we are making this plea that a redistricting and re-registration process take place. Our call is to the relevant authorities to be proactive. The bottom line is this – if you are talking the talk of good governance, principles and practices, put your money where your mouth is. If you want to exude or display that which is in line with those basic tenets, then do the redistricting and re-registration because it will ensure that the lists are in order, and we can move forward with a clean and clear list in a democratic process.”

Good call VIP…we need a re-registration but more importantly a re-districting. Too much power is centralized in the city!
