Lorenzo Smith Jr. Arraigned for 2009 Murder of Cellmate

Lorenzo Smith Jr.

An inmate of the Belize Central Prison serving ten years for arson got some more bad news earlier today. Following a preliminary inquiry this morning, Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith ruled that twenty-nine-year-old Lorenzo Smith Jr. will be tried in the Supreme Court for murder. In October 2009, Smith shared a cell with Arturo Eck, convicted of maim and assault.  Eck was found in his cell hanging from strips of cloth torn from his blanket, and authorities at first believed that it was suicide. But more than five years later, in January of this year, the office of the D.P.P. directed that Smith be charged for murder. His subsequent indictment led to the PI this morning. Relying on statements from prison authorities and the post-mortem examination report, Chief Magistrate Smith determined that there is enough evidence to go to trial, and directed that the matter be sent up to the June session of the Supreme Court. Smith was unrepresented and did not challenge any of the statements presented in court this morning by the prosecutor.
