OW Cops Guilty of Beating Up Andres Rodriguez

Andres Rodriguez

Tonight, the officers involved in the vicious beating of Andres Rodriguez in Orange Walk Town on Sunday have been found guilty of excessive use of force.  That is the outcome of a tribunal held earlier today.  As we reported on Wednesday, the officers will face disciplinary measures for their respective roles in the incident.  This afternoon, Rodriguez and his mother visited our office to give their side of what transpired over the weekend.  According to Maria Rodriguez, the family will pursue legal action against the officers, as well as the police department for damages caused during the beating.

“When he was in the house they took him outside and they continued beating him up.  They didn’t [stop].  He was able to stand up and when he got in the house they dragged him out again right in front of his kids and wife, then after that when they had already handcuffed him they took him to the hospital so that they could stitch his wounds on the head.  And then they took him back to the police station and while there sitting down with his hands handcuffed another policeman from there started beating him up, opened up the wound he had on his head again.  Two other policemen had to hold on to that police and had to move him from him.”

“Why was he being assaulted by the police in the first place?  What was he being pursued for?”

Maria Rodriguez

“They told him that until when they reached the station.  They told him that a woman reported, called the police because he was following her and when he was at the hospital with the….they’re sewing his stitches in the head they presented him a woman to recognize him and the woman said over him, “No, I don’t know him.”  And he thought she was a nurse because he didn’t know her either but she stated there that she didn’t know him.  So I don’t see why the police were beating him because she had made a phone call that that van that he was driving was following her.  That’s it, that’s the only reason.”

“Now the police department has stated that an investigation will be launched into this matter and disciplinary measures will be taken against the officers involved.  You guys are also now seeking legal advice as to the way forward.  Can you share some information with us on that?”

Maria Rodriguez

“On Monday after he was released, because he was released around eight o’clock in the morning, all this happened on Sunday night.  He was released at eight o’clock in the morning without charges.  There were no charges against him and they sent him home.  So we took him back to the court and we made a report on what happened and we don’t know why the police were beating him up.  That’s where we found out that a lady made a phone call stating that he was following her.  So now what we want to do is take legal action.  We are going to make sure that justice is made.”

Sue for as much you can get, in the millions. Press this issue even in the international press so that your plight’ nor that of poorer class of people won’t be forgotten. Visited Belize three times for this year already trying to take care of some business. We had an unfortunate incident as innocent bystanders with GSU and had to deal with their ignorance and illiteracy up to the highest level, including While who is basically a dumb puppet. We don’t think we’ll be back here.
