EU Inaugurates Sugar Road in San Narciso/San Victor

Today, two completed sections of road were officially inaugurated – that section from San Narciso to San Victor in the Corozal District, and another section from the old Northern Highway to its junction with B.S.I.  It’s a total of seven point eight miles of road which cost a little over eight million dollars, funded by the European Union as part of the Accompanying measures for Sugar Programme. The focus is on road rehabilitation – sugar roads – but while farmers are indeed grateful for the roadworks…for the EU they’re looking at a much bigger picture.

“This rehabilitation means a great deal to our cane farmers who have their sugar cane fields in the vicinity of these roads, and were rehabilitated. One of the problems that has been affecting our sugar cane industry and our canefarmers in particular are the poor conditions of the sugar feeder roads. This situation has made it difficult and costly for them to access their sugar cane fields and harvest and deliver their sugar cane on a timely basis. With this rehabilitation, they will now be able to take out and transport their sugar cane to the mill with greater ease and less time, cost of fuel, vehicle repair and spare parts. Moreover, the members of various communities which use these roads will now enjoy a greater comfort and convenience. Gone are the days when they had to endure the discomfort of many potholes, and the blinding and suffocating dustiness of these roads.”

H.E. Paola Amadei, Ambassador, European Union

“In the program for sugar as many as twenty-nine roads have been foreseen for rehabilitation and thirteen of them are in the area of Orange Walk. This program is so extensive and so far, it has been so well received and so successful, that many people even consider that the European Union has made too much for infrastructure and roadworks under this program. And they tend to forget the other aspects of the EU funded sugar program, notably the support to SIRDI, the support through CDB and DFC for credit to farmers…therefore I think we need to remember all these other aspects that help to increase the productivity and prepare for a better future for the sugar industry.”
