B.S.C.F.A. Chairman Gives Update on Present Sugar Crop

The Road Rehabilitation done in the area of San Narciso and san Victor will benefit the farmers and residents in those communities and in the vicinity. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s just a drop in the bucket. The industry is faced with major concerns because indications are that farmers across the board will be left with at least twenty percent of their cane un-harvested when the crop season ends. That’s largely due to the delay in the start of crop, but it is also due to the fact that cane-farmers are having trouble getting their cane to the factory.

Ezequiel Cansino, Chairman, Council of Management, B.S.C.F.A.

“The crop for us is going okay. Everything is going positive when it comes to the issue of the sucrose and the purity. We are doing very good and we believe that we will have a better price maybe this year because of the quality of cane that we are delivering. But we still have some big concerns from the cane farmers that the sugar cane that will be left in the cane fields…we are seeing that it will be much more than last year.”

“Could you tell us what are the factors which led to all this cane…much more than expected…being left in the field?”

Ezequiel Cansino

“Well I think that it’s obvious that the delay of the starting of the crop is the main factor why we will be staying with a lot of cane in the fields.”

“What about the sugar roads?”

Ezequiel Cansino

“The sugar roads…well according to the information that we have gotten from the group leaders and directors not all sugar roads have been fixed or upgraded. We believe that today we have the ideal weather to be working on that but up to now we haven’t seen anything yet, but there is much more to be done on the sugar roads.”

The cane farmers are waiting on a census that SIRDI is doing which will provide a better estimate of the amount of cane that will be left in the fields.
