…Company Rep Explains Misunderstanding

Beverly Burke

So, were the employees protesting or not? Santander rep in Belize, Beverly Burke says it wasn’t a protest but rather a miscommunication in the issuance of payments made on Friday, as result of an advance that the company had extended out of good faith to some employees. Here is how she explains it.

Via Phone: Beverly Burke, Santander Representative, Belize

“After we had made payments over the weekend, there were some issues that the employees wanted to clear about. I guess the way the supervisor at the time was approached on the issue and the number in which went to his office, he then took them to the HR department in which they discussed the break down for the last pay sheet. We don’t do weekly payrolls; we have set time in which the number of hours work is calculated. The pay date was falling after the Easter break, so a number of employees had approached management requesting your pay in advanced, so to speak. So when they received their payment in Friday last, the figures looked a little small to them. I think in not fully understanding what it meant to them, we looked at what they ordinarily would earn, given the number of days worked. It was simply the difference between that. It was an advance pay and not necessarily an advance of their pay, if you want to really play on words that way. So it was the difference in the payroll that they received this Friday and a number of them were actually confused about that.”

“So, everything was resolved today?”

“You know what Andrea, I definitely feel confident that we have managed the issue and it was a matter then of really getting on a one to one basis with our employees and talk about what is happening on their pay sheet. It is something that we keep on encouraging because our work force is well over eight hundred people and it is a large group that we manage. And at times there are questions that come up based on the pay that they receive.”

In response to “pay raise” as employees had discussed, Burke says that as a private company they do not do yearly increments. When supervisors recognize employees who are outstanding or improving, recommendations may be made to reward performance. Since today’s meeting, all the employees have returned to work.
