Ambassador Nestor Mendez on the Way Forward for O.A.S.

Nestor Mendez

Belize’s Ambassador to the O.A.S., Nestor Mendez, in a historic vote became the new Assistant Secretary General Elect of the organization.  The post becomes effective later this year in July and will be held by Ambassador Mendez for the next five years.  In his first time back in Belize since the election, he too attended the meeting today held at the Radisson. We got a word from the Assistant Sec. Gen. Elect on the way forward for the O.A.S.

Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General Elect, O.A.S.

“It has been quite an experience. One that has took approximately two years of campaigning with the entire Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the office of the Prime Minister pushing. We have never done something like this before. It was a new experience certainly in the context of the Organization of American States. It is very exciting, it is challenging; I think we have a great opportunity at the moment as an organization that is changing leadership, but also an organization that has just concluded agreement on its strategic vision. We will start working on a strategic plan; things are happening and it is a good moment right now. And I think we have to make use of the opportunity to put the organization in the position where it is better able to deliver what the member states need from the organization. I am very proud and honored to represent Belize to the O.A.S.; for many years I have been the ambassador there and now I will be assuming the second spot in the leadership and certainly looking forward to making the big move.”
