Police Investigate Infant Death

Hilberto Romero

A toddler is dead and police are investigating the cause of the death of the eleven month old baby. Karen De Jesus Perez reported to police that sometime around seven-thirty on Wednesday, April first she was attending to her eleven month old daughter, Mia Eusebia Lopez, when the child started to cry. Perez told police that upon making checks on the baby, she noticed that the baby was gasping for air. About eight that morning, police visited Perez’ home on Curl Thompson Street where they found the child lying face up on a sofa. The infant was transported to the K.H.M.H. for medical attention, but a post mortem would later reveal that baby Mia died from severe cerebral edema resulting from “multiple skull fractures due to blunt force trauma to the head.” News Five visited the twenty-one year old mother today and she said that her husband cautioned her against speaking with the media because they didn’t want to get in any trouble with the law. The mother says she is very distressed over her daughter’s death because she was alone at home with her children when the incident happened.  Belize City police say that although it is listed as a sudden death on the daily police sitrep, they are investigating because of the results of the postmortem.
