Your Weekend Sports With James Adderley

Justin Williams

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday on a Tuesday. Hope you had an enjoyable Easter Weekend. For certain you were thrilled with the results of the 87th Annual Cross Country Cycling Classic, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

In front of B.T.L. for the rolling start and honored to be in front of the 94 riders in the hunt are the 2013 champion, Darnell Barrow; Shane Vasquez, champion in 2006; Giovanni Choto the boss in 2012; American Bull Ellison, who wore the garland in 2005 and Chris Harkey, back to back champion in 2003 and 2004. The rolling start is designed to shepherd the riders to Fabers Road where the real competition steps into center stage. And we are at the back of the pelathon when the real action begins. At Roaring Creek Garbutt Service Station, Ricardo Santiago steps out of the lead pack to grab that premie followed by Scottie Weiss in a group of 11 that includes Leroy Cassasola, Aiden Juan, Erwin Middleton, David Henderson and the Williams brothers Justin and Corey. So we go to San Ignacio and it’s David Henderson who takes the halfway prize and all eleven in the lead group remain intact. Meanwhile, the lead is down to 9 on the return through Roaring Creek. Young Aiden Juan is the big man to capture this station prize and the lead group would be further reduced to 6 around mile 31.

Our next view of the race finds Scottie Wiess, the American, leading on the BelCan Bridge being followed closely by Justin Williams, Godinez Jimenez, Corey Williams and Daid Henderson, who opts for a little more speed. The coveted prize is some 5 minutes away and the act and mouse game begins. Behind them, a furious chase is being mounted by Byron Pope and Chris Harkey. It would prove to be a little too late and a bridge too far. So now it’s money time and it’s Justin Williams making the first move—Scottie Weiss challenges only to be vanquished by Justin Williams of Bel-Cal Cycling Club to win his 1st cross country in 5 hours 54 minutes 39 seconds; 14 minutes 27 seconds off the record set by Ryan Bauman in 2008.

Scottie Weiss of Team Starlight is forced into 2nd place; David Henderson of Smart Zoom Team emerged as an elite contender for the garland rolling in for 3rd; Godinez Jimenez of Cancun Cycling pulls up for 4th place in 5:54:53 edging out Corey Williams of Bel-Cal who rounds out the top 5. Kudos to Calman Williams who saw his sons carry the torch he had started. Byron Pope of Benny’s Megabytes bested Christopher Harkey of Team Starlight for 6th place—both finished 6 minutes 28 seconds behind the winner. Manuel Rodas of Smart finished 8th 10 seconds later while Jose Choto of C Ray Road Addix took 9th; Jose Robles Lopez 51 years young riding for Western Spirit rounds out the top 10.

Turning to track and field, Kenroy Hamilton proved to be the classs of the field winning the 2 mile race from B.T.L. Park to SJC and back in 11:15. Erwin Hamilton pulled up 11 seconds later for the runner up spot and Xavier Belgrave’s 11:46 was good enough for 3rd place. On the female side, Ashanti Carr took top honors and Kira Davis 2nd. Meanwhile Albert Davis provided excitement and some drama as he finishes the ½ marathon in 1 hour 22 mins 58 seconds, but 1st Juan Bulum must find the tape for his 2nd place finish 6 seconds behind Davis. Davis it seems might have asked too much of his body and collapses to the cement. He is immediately assisted by the 1st aid team and would recover to pick up his trophy. Darwin Rhaburn finished 3rd in 1:28:42 and Jamal Galvez 4th in 1:29:41

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
