City Council Automates Payment of Property Tax

Marilyn Ordonez

Overwhelming demand from Belizeans living abroad has led to the Belize City Council automating its property tax services.  This morning, CitCo and Atlantic Bank jointly introduced the online feature which is being touted as a breakthrough in the administration’s efforts to computerize its amenities.  The idea was borne of a conversation with former Deputy Mayor B.Q. Pitts Junior who was instrumental in seeing the project through.  Director of Finance Marilyn Ordonez spoke of its innovation.

“Today is that milestone that we are allowing our residents now to access our cashiers, as we would like to say, and pay online.  So it’s an innovative move to facilitate our clients and partnering with Atlantic Bank we are reaching out to those not only at home but abroad because we have many of our clients who always call to find out how I can pay my taxes without having to go through a third person or without having to come in to the office.  So we are facilitating that and as we said, Atlantic Bank is very dynamic, they have been spurring us on and we are moving with them.”

“We are delivering quality services to residents and we are ensuring that they can access governmental services in an easy way and it’s very pleasing that we are able to partner with one of the more dynamic entities in our community, Atlantic Bank who have worked with the city council in the finance and banking area because they have financed several of our city projects and now for us to have put together a public/private sector partnership in this manner where we will allow residents to more easily access the payment services.  One of the ways that this really came about was through a conversation with councilor B.Q. Pitts at the council and he was indicating, he is the councilor with responsibility for MIS, that he was indicating that many residents from abroad were complaining that they would want to pay their property taxes but they do not have an easy or efficient means of doing so.  They would have to relay with somebody in Belize or they would have to wait until they travel within the jurisdiction.  So that conversation was birthed there and Mrs. Ordonez, the City Administrator, the MIS Manager Mr. Benjamin and our partners from Atlantic Bank really jumped onboard to develop the mechanisms so that you can pay online.”
