Honduran Man Gets 3 Years for Armed Robbery

A Honduran national living in Belize pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm and while he was spared from being imposed the minimum mandatory sentence of seven years, he could not escape jail time. Darwin Martinez and two other persons held up a woman and her son in the Jane Usher Boulevard.  Martinez could not give any good reason why he joined two men on Friday evening, March twenty-seventh , 2015, to rob forty six year Olga Ayala. The businesswoman had just exited her shop and was about to enter the gate of her home when she was approached by three men, one armed with a firearm, the other two armed with knives.  According to Ayala, she and her son were approached by the men, one armed with the firearm hit her in the head and fearing for her life, she handed over two hundred dollars and they fled.  But one of the robbers, identified as Martinez, dropped a bag in which he had a prescription in his name and which would eventually lead police to him. The bag was picked up b Ayala’s son, who witnessed the robbery.  In court, when Martinez was read a single charged of robbery, he wasted no time and pleaded guilty.  Since he is a first time offender, the Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith imposed a custodial sentence of three years.
