President Obama to Meet with CARICOM Heads of Government in Jamaica

Barack Obama

And this piece of regional news….The Summit of the Americas will be held this year in Panama on the eleventh and twelfth of April. It is deemed a historic meeting because for the first time, the Cuba will be allowed to participate following a proposed lift to the embargo between that country and the United States last year. But before U.S. President Barack Obama arrives in Panama, he will be making a state visit in Jamaica on the eve of the meeting, on April ninth.  That state visit is also historic says Jamaica’s prime minister, Portia Simpson-Miller because the country will be hosting a meeting between President Obama and the heads of government of CARICOM for discussions on issues on the CARICOM-U.S.A. agenda…including security and trade. Simpson Miller made the announcement during the sitting of parliament in Jamaica.

“This meeting will mark another significant milestone in the longstanding relations and in the friendship and cooperation shared by CARICOM and the U.S.A.  I look forward to welcoming to our shores President Obama and the heads of government from our CARICOM family of nations. The visit of the US president holds special significance. It is an affirmation of the strong ties of friendship and cooperation that have united the peoples of Jamaica and the United States for centuries.”
