Noh Mul Case Moved Back To Corozal

There was another big case before the courts today. On Wednesday, Magistrate Hurl Hamilton transferred the case of the destruction of the Noh Mul Archeological Site to Belize City due to logistical purposes. The trial was to commence after almost two years after the Maya monument was grazed to the ground purportedly by employees of DeMar’s Stone Company, owned by Orange Walk U.D.P. standard bearer, Denny Grijalva. Grijalva’s Attorney, Bryan Neal, had submitted back on Wednesday that the case be struck out after a request was made for further adjournment by Prosecutor Kileru Awich. Well, today in the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, Attorney Neal appeared without his clients and submitted that the case returns to Corozal…and it was.  Following the adjournment, News Five spoke with Attorney Neal about the no show of his clients and the delay in the trial.

Bryan Neal, Attorney for Denny Grijalva

“I raised first the issue of venue because this matter was transferred on Wednesday to Belize City and no satisfactory reason was given as to why it would come to Belize City. The issue for the defense being that there would be unfair media coverage of this matter, which would make it difficult to have a fair trial. The chief magistrate has ordered that this matter be transferred back to Corozal. So when we come back on the next occasion, it will be in Corozal. The issue is one of liability. I don’t want to get into the case. it is for the prosecution to prove that my client, Denny Grijalva and his wife and others and his company were in fact guilty of the crimes alleged and we will see what the prosecution brings. There are certain videos that were not disclosed to us—I brought that to the attention of the chief magistrate—those will be disclosed on Wednesday. And based on the prosecution’s case, we will prepare our defense. But my client maintains his innocence in this entire matter.  In respect of the absence of my client from court, I was notified after we left court on Wednesday about the date of the trial today. But he was in Corozal and then he went to Corozal and I just informed him this morning of the trial so he was unaware. But his absence was excused by the chief magistrate.”
