Weekend Violence Ends in Murder of Michael Welch

Michael Welch

There were three murders over the weekend; two in Belize City and one in Corozal. In the city, we start with the most recent murder that occurred just after eleven on Sunday night. Two disc jockeys were socializing at a residence on Periwinkle Street when they were targeted by two gunmen who were reportedly on bicycles. Michael Welch was shot multiple times and died within minutes, while Kingsley Morrison was shot once to the upper right shoulder, rushed to the K.H.M.H. where he was treated and has since been released. But was the murder motivated by gang rivalry in the area? Duane Moody went looking for answers and has this story.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Just after eleven on Sunday night, in the wake of another shooting in the Mahogany Street area, several shots rang out on Periwinkle Street. Twenty-four year olds Michael Welch and Kingsley Morrison were outside Morrison’s residence socializing near the gateway when two gunmen approached and fired several shots at them. While Morrison was hit once and ran from his attackers, Welch’s foot was trapped in the walkway; he screamed for help as he was shot three times. The bloodstains on Periwinkle Street show that he bled profusely on the ground before he was rushed to the hospital in the back of a pickup truck.

Alden Dawson

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, O.C., Precinct 2, Eastern Division

“The police was once again called out sometime after eleven p.m., where they learnt during an investigation that twenty-four year old Michael Welch and Kingsley Morrison were socializing on Periwinkle Street when two persons passed by and fired several shots of which the shots caught the now deceased Michael Welch. One to the chest, one to the abdomen and one to the leg and he is, like I said, now deceased. While Kingsley Morrison remained stable at the K.H.M.H.”

The two disc jockeys are cousins and were ambushed from behind. Welch’s sister, Monisha heard moments later about his demise.

Voice of: Monisha Welch, Sister of Murder Victim

“I noh really got no information on what happened. I just know dehn called me and said that he passed away.”

Reporter

“Around what time did you receive that call?”

Voice of: Monisha Welch

“Like lee bit before twelve o’clock.”

Kingsley Morrison

Reporter

“Did your brother die shortly after or on the spot?”

Voice of: Monisha Welch

“Shortly after he reached the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.”

Duane Moody

“What did they tell you happened to him?”

Reporter

“And to which part of his body was he shot?”

Voice of: Monisha Welch

“They noh tell me that as yet…we have to wait for the post mortem.”

But was the shooting on Periwinkle Street retaliatory to the murder of Japhet Martinez, a Belize City youth from the Gungulung area, who was killed in another shooting four hours earlier near the basketball court behind the Complex?

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“We have nothing at this time to link them to say they are related and like I said, with the gang, we can’t say that it is gang at this time.”

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., CIB, Eastern Division

“We cannot say at this time if they are related. We have our investigators out on the ground who are recording statements, doing interviews, to try to ascertain the motives for these two murders.”

Hilberto Romero

According to Welch’s sister, Monisha, he was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Voice of: Monisha Welch

“Sometimes yo deh dah the wrong place at the wrong time and that dah when sometimes things happened.”

Reporter

“You don’t believe that your brother was involved in anything?”

Voice of: Monisha Welch

“I know he wasn’t involved in anything. I know that for a fact and everybody knows that.”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“These were persons who were just hanging out at that particular area when two gunmen approached and fired shots. We do not know that they are from any gang.”

Several persons have since been detained in connection with this homicide. Duane Moody for News Five.

ROD, why are you blaming the UDP for what people do to one another? GOD who made man in his own image, don’t have the power to control his own people, how can UDP or any P control a way ward people? Let me suggest to you something; instead of complaining every week; why don’t you write or go on any media out let and give advice to the people on how to behave themselves? Come on Open your Eyes, I listen and watch Marlene & her co- host every morning; I enjoy listening to the aspiring PUP to be.
