Wil Maheia Says He’s the Man for PG’s Mayorship

Wil Maheia

The People’s United Party has been at the helm of the Punta Gorda Town Council for the past three years, under a U.D.P. Central Government. According to Maheia, that hasn’t worked for the municipality, and both parties have fallen down on the job, leaving the path open for his People’s National Party.

Wil Maheia, Mayoral Candidate, People’s National Party

“People are very, very dissatisfied with the U.D.P. right now because U.D.P. is in the position where they have the Petrocaribe money, but PG people are not asleep. They realize that PG got less than one percent of all the millions of Petrocaribe money, so nothing has really come to PG out of the Petrocaribe money more than the backfill for some streets but nothing has come to PG. One of the blows to the U.D.P., I can tell them right now, is the breaking down of the Sports Complex so now the people don’t have any place to play, and they’re going to take at least five months before they start to build it, so why didn’t they wait five months to break it down? Why did they break it down right before Christmas to show like something was happening and then everything is at a standstill now, for over sixty-seven days now? There hasn’t been a person on the site, over sixty-seven days. So people are watching and people are taking notes.”

“Now that’s against the U.D.P. So what about the P.U.P. which controlled the Council in PG?”

Wil Maheia

“Again, it’s weak leadership from the P.U.P.  There is a Mayor, but all he does is complain that Belmopan is not giving him any subsistence and is not helping PG Town. Well we will not depend on Belmopan. Our team of capable candidates will seek investors to come in. We will be more efficient at tax collection…we will find ways to generate revenues for this town.”

It is the first time that the P.N.P., founded in 2007, has fielded a full slate in municipal elections.
