Buttonwood Bay Drainage Project Inaugurated

As we told you earlier, Caribbean Shores Area Representative Santiago ‘Santino’ Castillo is campaigning in his constituency tonight. On Saturday, as part of his campaign, he officially inaugurated the Buttonwood Bay Drainage Project. The infrastructure work was financed through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank, and implemented through the Social Investment Fund. Costing just under a million, the project is aimed at alleviating flooding in the areas surrounding Buttonwood Bay Boulevard, as well as improving the aesthetics of the area. The official ceremony was held at Dolphin Park on Seashore Drive.

William Lamb, Executive Director, Social Investment Fund

“This drainage project will address both health and environmental issues in this area, preventing long lasting floods and reducing stagnant water from around the area. The scope of the work included main concrete drains on Park Avenue and Buttonwood Bay Boulevard, running from the Phillip Goldson Highway down to the sea.”

“The drainage project started during my tenure, after I got elected. It was in the pipeline. I helped to push it, bring it to fruition, and it cost SIF a little under a million dollars. The bids went in for it…it was won by Mr. Medina and he started work immediately. We came to check up on it on a regular basis. We had a timeline and finally everything was finished. I must also thank City Council who did some other works, and of course, as you can see, in this area people can now walk in the evenings, run in the evening, so it’s turned out really nice for the residents.”

The scope of the works also included the placement of seven culverts, pedestrian crossings and the construction of driveways for those in the area affected by the project.
