Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Metrology Lab

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in the Capital on Tuesday evening for new Belize Bureau of Standards Metrology Laboratory. The building, which will be constructed by the Ministry of Works, is being financed by the European Union under the Belize Rural Development Project Two with the technical guidance of the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality. According to Minister of Trade and Investment, Erwin Contreras, the state of the art facility will better assist the Bureau of Standards with its day-to-day trade and improve its quality of service.

“It gives me great pleasure to be here today to break ground for the construction of our own metrology lab, a state of the art facility, that has been designed and plan during the course of the past five years to match the present and future trade facilitation needs of our country. Metrology is the science of measurement and there is nothing that we do or encounter in our daily lives that don’t resolve around measurements. When we measure how hot or cold we are, how much fuel we put in our cars or how many pounds of rice or beans we buy at the story. Consequently the quality of measurements is an extremely important factor in daily life and it is a vital component of trade and investment infrastructure development. This Metrology Laboratory designed by international experts in the field will meet the strict environmental conditions that are required in order to maintain the integrity of the services it will provide. It will give the bureau the boost it needs to properly support trade in Belize and will serve to build Belize’s reputation within the international measurement community.  As construction progresses, the Belize Bureau of Standards will embark on a program to build the technical capacity of our own local measurement experts to ensure that once these doors are opened, the requisite human resources are present and that they are ready to provide calibrations services for mass, volume, temperature, pressure and dimensional equipment that our country so greatly needs. This facility will in essence help to lift the international profile of Belize and will allow us to, with the highest level of proficiency, participate in inter-comparisons in CARICOM and the Americas.”

The facility was designed by PTB, the National Metrology Institute of Germany.
