…And Chastises G.O.B. for Playing Politics

John Briceño

Briceño, after outlining what the P.U.P. has done for the industry, chastised the government for what he calls playing politics with an industry which affects the lives of fifty thousand persons in the north.

John Briceño, Area Representative, Orange Walk Central

“I dislike the idea that we are playing politics with an industry that is so vital to our national development. I am also angry with the actions of some of the U.D.P. government, including the Deputy Prime Minister, who is creating more chaos in the industry instead of finding how they can fix and workable solutions for our cane farmers in the north. We cannot, we cannot play politics with the sugar industry, Mister Speaker. We on this side, we pride ourselves in saying that we have always reached across the aisle to work with the government when it is needed. In 2010 when B.S.I. could not pay the cane farmers, we on this side pressured the government to lend B.S.I. ten million dollars so that they can pay the cane farmers. We on this side, we put the pressure on them. Remember when they wanted to give away B.S.I. at a crack price to the Atlantida Group from Honduras? We were the ones that made noise and stopped that from happening Mister Speaker. And when the government needed support for the incentives that were given to ASR, Mister Speaker, we on this side gave them the support so that ASR could get the incentives. But we also pointed out that the same incentives you give to ASR; you need to give those same incentives to our cane farmers.”
