B.D.F. Volunteer Stabbed to Death in the City

Denver Villafranco

In Belize City, the grieving family of Denver Villafranco says various persons watched as the B.D.F. volunteer was cold-bloodedly murdered by a group of three men believed to be persons with whom he had a previous altercation. The murder happened on Saturday night in proximity of where he lived with his mother. Police recovered the knife used in the stabbing and have four men on detention. Andrea Polanco reports on the City’s latest homicide.

Five days after he celebrated his twenty-third birthday, Denver Villafranco, a B.D.F. Volunteer of Police Street, was killed. Around seven on Saturday night, Villafranco was walking here on Sun Flower Street when he was attacked and stabbed to the right side of his abdomen. His mother, Joyce Villafranco who last saw him alive around two that afternoon, was called out of her house to the scene of her son’s attack.

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco, Mother of Murder Victim

“When I see him down there, I see him lying down with his face up. I was trying to talk to him but he cannot say anything. I prayed with my son down there but he doesn’t say nothing.”

Andrea Polanco

“Was he already dead when you got there?”

Joyce Villafranco

“No. According to what I heard he died at the hospital.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you know how many stab wounds he received?”

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco

“I believe it’s only one, but it was with a machete, until they take out his guts.”

But who would have wanted Villafranco dead and why? His family believes it may have been committed by people he knew. According to his mother, it was triggered by a fight that he attempted to stop on Friday night.

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco

“The night before when I stand on my verandah I heard a little argument, but I didn’t pay it any mind. So according to what I heard, my son, he went to part a fight the night before. He didn’t expect that they were going to do him something, so he was either coming home or going to see his daughter.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you believe more than one person involved?”

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco

“Yes. From what I understand it’s four of them. One was the driver and three attacked my son down there.”

Andrea Polanco

“And all of this happened right near where he lives?”

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco

“Yes. Very close. Because I stand right off my verandah and look across every day and I can see it. Every day. I get up and look and I can see right across there. They chance my son, Miss. They take my son life. He doesn’t deserve to go that way.  From what I heard, like what I told you, he went to part a fight. So he didn’t expect they were coming after him. They take him from back and hit him on his head with a rock. They took the machete and held him down by the drain. They choked him.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you believe people witnessed this incident?”

Voice of: Joyce Villafranco

“Lotta people. Lotta people. Out deh dah mi like bazaar.”

Echoing the sentiments of the Villafranco family, Denver’s friend said he was an easy-going person. The murder left them in shock, and they are equally astounded and disappointed that it happened so close to home while neighbors watched.

Voice of: Rosalind Augustine, Friend of Deceased

“To kill him the way they did was totally uncalled for because it had nothing to do with him. He was trying to be the peacemaker and they just took away his life like that. He was my brother. My friend. I have nothing bad to say of Denver. For the family members of the perpetrators to just stand there. Others, the neighbours just stood there. They did absolutely nothing to prevent this from happening.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you think that if someone who saw this, and tried to break it up, that Denver would be alive today?”

Voice of: Rosalind Augustine

“He would. He would be alive.”

Hilberto Romero

According to Police, however, Denver was involved in the fight on Friday night which resulted in a second fight on Saturday that ended in his murder. Four persons are in police custody.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, OC, CIB, Eastern Division

“Our investigation has been conducted and we have about four persons in our custody and statements have been recorded to determine who of these persons will be charged for this murder.”

Reporter

“Can you give us some information as to why Mr. Villafranco was stabbed?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Our investigation revealed that he was involved in a fight the previous night and on Saturday he was attacked again and he was stabbed and killed.”

Reporter

“You said “involved”- Was he trying to part the fight or he was a part?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“He was a part of the fight on Saturday night.”

Reporter

“The fights? Do you know what reasons lead to the fight?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Some misunderstanding they had before, that was what led to the fight, the previous night and on Saturday night.”

Reporter

“These fights, are they dating back to any old issues?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Yes, they had some fights from before. They are from the same neighborhood and they had some issues.”
