Hattieville Resident Remanded for Unpaid Court Bill

Gian Stiane

Twenty-three year old Hattieville resident, Gian Stiane, is behind bars tonight on the first day of a three year conviction. Staine appeared before Magistrate Herbert Panton on a charge of drug trafficking.  He is accused of having one hundred and three grams of cannabis for the purpose of supplying it to another person. Staine pleaded not guilty but it came to light that he owed the court nine thousand nine hundred dollars for a previous drug conviction in 2012 for which he had only paid one hundred dollars.  And while there was no objection to bail, his unpaid bill landed him behind bars. Magistrate Panton told Staine that if he had made efforts to pay, he would have been granted an extension but since he had not, he was ordered to pay in full or in the least half of the amount. Staine begged for leniency and asked if he could resume paying his old bill since he now has a job, but the magistrate sent him to the Hattieville prison.
