P.U.P. Condemns G.O.B. for Destroying the Association

Francis Fonseca

As has become apparent, the backs of farmers have been broken by a combination of ASR/B.S.I.’s inflexible stance, and G.O.B.’s deliberate withdrawal from the equation at a critical juncture. In the next couple of days all farmers are likely to have signed on to the agreement with the factory, for better or worse. The P.U.P. called a press conference to state what they feel should have been done differently. And the opposition blamed the government for what is clearly an unpleasant, undesirable turn of events in the industry.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“Our Party condemns in the strongest possible terms the decision by Prime Minister Barrow and his U.D.P. Government to destroy this long established partnership in the industry. Barrow and the U.D.P. have abandoned the caneros and the Belizean people’s interests and have decidedly sided with the multinational ASR. Just like the U.D.P. abandoned the Mayan people in favour of US Capital in the South, so too today they have turned their backs on the cane farmers. When Mr. Barrow and the U.D.P., under political pressure, finally engaged in this crisis, all they were interested in is getting a deal, signing an agreement. It didn’t matter how fair or unfair that deal was…that agreement was. Mr. Barrow as usual just wanted to look good. Well Barrow has now forced that deal, forced that agreement. He has gotten that deal. And the farmers and all Belizeans now know that the agreement is one-sided and unfair to the farmers of Belize. It is for this one-sided unfair deal that Barrow and the U.D.P., even as we meet today, are actively working to break up and destroy the fifty-five year old institution that is the B.S.C.F.A.”

PUP is not trying to gain political mileage from this; (in a low voice) how far ahead (miles) are we, since we started this campaign on this subject? I am an old man now (81) and the dishonesty from some politician is getting me down. Mr. Barrow told the nation why he did not complied with the court direction to change the law to give other cane group to replace BSCFA as sole representative of sugar cane growers in the north. As reported the BSCFA will sign and remain the only body to negotiate the affairs of the Cane farmers, thanks to Mr. Barrow foresight. Everyone is talking about the 40,000 northerners whom are suffering by the zafra not open; what about the other 310,000 citizens, who will have no brown or white sugar when the factory isn’t open for production? I listened to all the newscasts, and I am sorry for CH5 news anchor Ms. Marlene at 6:30pm Monday evening and it is obvious that she is in a straight jacket, when she is forced to read the butchered news on the sugar cane industry; because, on Open your eyes, which she co-hosted earlier in the morning; Marlene was so free and relaxed when she had an in-depth conversation with three representatives of Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She was able to draw out very important points; from a balance view of her line of conversation. Why can’t CH5 news director present the news in a similar way, other than a chopped up excerpts of the news to suit one political party.

    Good Day,

It is truly sad and dis-heartening to see the prevalance of politics in this Sugar Industry issue. It is plain to see that everything happening right now is based on PUP/UDP. It’s couldn’t be any clearer to see who the opposition is (we as Belizeans are not stupid and ignorant).

A deal was already arrived at about a month ago but because of a couple directors (4 out of 18) who opposed the signing; while adding an anti-government lawyer to the mix – here we are now, a month later with $31 million dollars short due to the delay of crop. The agreement between BSI and the farmers is a compromise from both sides which also contains clauses to terminate the agreement if certain requirements aren’t met. There is also a clause to hopefully re-negotiate for bagasse after about 3 years or so. It is important to know the FACTS and never let emotion overtake you.

*I say again, it is so sad to see the how deep politics has gotten into this issue and has actually prevented the signing of an agreement which has resulted in much more losses than gains. Every issue is political and it’s getting to a point where it is ridiculous and annoying – please stop it!!!

    Best Regards,
    Carl

Here we go again with more misinformation. The ones who did not want the crop to start are on the finance committee, they thought they would stop the crop, and the farmers were stupid. Dean Barrow see these ones as the problem, why negotiate with the board when the farmers have agreed to start the crop. What is being signed now is a paper who wants crop if you do not sign you CANNOT deliver your cane to the factory. This has nothing to do with the baggasse payment agreement. They keep blaming the PM when their OWN GREEDINESS is the only ones to BLAME.

I tell you, PUP will remain where they are for the next 15 years, until they learn. The bigger cane farmers are taking advantage of the smaller farmers, so they don’t care if the small farmer cane spoils. How sad, grediness, mismanagement and corruption is plagueing the association offices.
