Belize City Man Fined for Domestic Dispute

Alvin Jones

Following the opening of the Supreme Court, a number of cases were dealt with. Forty-five year old Alvin Jones, who had been in police custody since last week Thursday, the day after his common-law wife made a report of domestic dispute against him, was charged with Common Assault upon Michelle Ortiz.  When Jones was read the single charge, he pleaded guilty immediately. He admitted that he hit Ortiz following an altercation and that it was a mistake. It was at that point that Ortiz entered the court room and told the magistrate that she wants Jones to take care of their two children and that she wanted nothing more to do with him. But Ortiz told the court that her husband was under the influence of alcohol when the incident happened and that whenever he is drunk, he acts up and that he has been beating her for nine years. Ortiz said, however, that she did not want him to go to jail because he is a good provider and if he goes to jail, he will not be able to take care of their children. Of interest is that less than a year ago, Jones and Ortiz, on August twenty-ninth, 2014, visited the Family Court where he signed an undertaking that he will not go to their house while under the influence, but he breached that undertaking and that is an offense. His court records also show that he owes two hundred and sixty dollars to the court which he was ordered to pay by February twenty-eighth, 2015. For assaulting his wife, he was fined three hundred dollars which he will also have to pay by the end of February.
