Suspect sought in Friday night homicide

Story PictureAccording to our records, the nation’s last murder occurred back on August twentieth, a veritable lifetime ago by current standards. Well, that nearly two weeks of relative peace was broken in a big way this weekend by three homicides: two by gunfire and one by machete. The first shots rang out on Friday night.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting
Twenty-year-old Jason Hill better known as “Jex” was not a young man known to give trouble; in fact he is described as a well mannered person who loved to play football. But on Friday night Hill’s future came to an abrupt end after he was shot several times, just a block from his home. Margarita Hill says she was watching television in the living room when she heard the gunshots, but she never thought the bullets had anything to do with her family… that is until a young man came to the house holding her son’s chain, saying that he was just shot.

Hill said her son had just left the house on his bike to visit his girlfriend, but as he turned into Sarstoon Street he reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a child who ran across the street and crashed into another bike. The other rider and another young man became extremely upset and confronted Hill, who witnesses say, just did not want any trouble.

“Just off of simpleness because everybody say, your son talk to the young man and seh what di go on; man, I noh deh pan that. Your son get off the bike to come back way to try and avoid trouble from happening, they say. And when the next young man lift up his shirt, so he realise something going to go on now. So he got on his bike to ride back, back way to try and avoid trouble from happening, and they seh the boy he just start to open fire because everything dah inna his back he get.”

Hill was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but died shortly after arriving. Police have identified the triggerman as eighteen-year-old Leroy Henry. A warrant has since been issued for his arrest. At this time, the police do not have a motive but are investigating several reports including one that suggests someone may have been following Hill from earlier that day. Another report is that the suspect deliberately put his bike in the path of Hill’s beach cruiser.
