Family loses second son to murder

Story PictureThe weekend’s second murder occurred on Sunday night, also on the south side of Belize City. Again, it was the victim’s relatives left with more questions than answers.

Members of his family are having a very tough time dealing with the shooting death of twenty-seven year old Sherwin Requeña. Requeña, who was the assistant librarian for the University of Belize in Belmopan, was shot in the back as he stood talking to a neighbour on the corner of Zacaranda and Oleander Streets. Cela Will says she feared the worst as soon as she heard the gunshots, believed to have come from a tech nine.

Cela Will, Mother of the Deceased
“I knew it was him because three months ago a boy came and fired three shots at him. And I knew it was him when I heard the shots. I ran out of my house and down the street looking to see if I see him and when I saw him on the ground, his elder brother holding him you know and I ran there. And he said to me to get the car to take him to the hospital right, but when I look at him I knew he was dead.”

Meanwhile, the neighbour Requeña was talking too, Dona Cayetano, received gunshot wounds to her left knee and left side of the buttocks. Requeña, who lives just a short distance away, was on his way home when two men on bicycles approached him. One pointed a firearm and fired approximately eight shots. Most of the bullets caught Requeña on the right side of the body.

“While walking to his house, a friend hailed him and gave him a Guinness, that live right over the other side, Cacho, and he received the Guinness and was walking along with them and stand up in front of his gate talking with the lady that got shot too. And same time the murderer came from behind and shot him in the back.”

Police do not have a motive for the shooting and the family are at a loss as to why their son was killed.

Cela Will
“It was a senseless murder, because well everybody would say, a mom would say that his child is good right. I wouldn?t say that my child is good, but I know for a fact that he does not go out there and interfere with anyone. He does not cause problems right he is a loving person and everyone knows him as a kind hearted person and likes to hang with him.”

“It’s all about jealousy, yes, it is all about jealousy because we don’t have to sell drugs to survive. We are hard working people, we have our jobs and we work and we take care of ourselves, right. That’s the big philosophy of it, they don’t like to see how we are living.”

Authorities say they are looking for two persons in connection with the murder. Today, Requeña’s mother had this to say to the killers.

Cela Will
“One thing I would like to say to the killers because they know who they are, those player haters. One thing I would like to say to them is remember they have families just like how Sherwin Requeña have a good family, a loving family. That’s it.”

Four years ago Sherwin Requeña’s brother was also murdered, in front of the family home on Zacaranda Street.
