PM on Amendment to Sugar Act

Dean Barrow

And then Prime Minister Barrow dropped the hammer, expressing its full support for any group which would organize to deliver cane outside of the B.S.C.F.A. That signifies a complete dismissal of the Association by government. And the PM says he doesn’t even have to call a House meeting to amend the Act at this point. Government will instead step back and allow for individual farmers and or associations to demonstrate their muscle and intent to deliver cane. And if they get it done, the amendment would follow.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Things are now at a point where the Corozal Division of the B.S.C.F.A. met to discuss splitting completely from Orange Walk and registering itself as a separate organization. That apart, several individual branches from both Orange Walk and Corozal have talked about forming an alliance to go and jointly sign an agreement with ASR/B.S.I., start the crop and thereafter register themselves as the organizations. Those farmers and branches which are talking about getting together to sign the agreement with B.S.I. outside of the B.S.C.F.A. have a constitutional right to do so. That is both self-evident, and clear, as a matter of the 2010 Supreme Court order…and Government, if those farmers chose to exercise their undoubted right, will do whatever is necessary to vindicate that right. That is the law of land and government’s constitutional duty. There is no doubt that government, in view of the frustration and prejudice that the impasse has caused, is encouraging of these moves to have a crop, and there is also no doubt that once new cane farmers association are registered, government will at that time assuredly amend the Act to comply with the Court order and to give express legal recognition to the new associations.”

ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THIS STORY. This sector of the economy contributes 2% of our GDP. And it’s boring. Use your imagination and find something else to fill in the hour. Go visit a Child Care center or an Assisted-Living facility. Or do something on the plight of the girls at Rose Garden (or whatever the new name is). How about a collage of cold cases? There are some interesting cold cases like the murder of Coombs at the Port a few years ago. Stick a mic in the Compol’s face and hold him accountable. Just do something.
