Healthy Living: get techy and live healthy

Welcome to our first segment of Healthy Living for 2015. To start the year with a bang and to help us set our goals for a balanced life style we have been looking at technology. Now if you are not techy, no need to feel scared because there are simple and easy applications that you can add to your phone to get you going in achieving those New Year resolutions.

Marleni Cuellar, Reporting

Technology has radically changed the way we live our lives. We can skip going to bank, stores just by a swipe or click on your device. So, the main criticism has been that because of the convenience of technology we’ve become a lot less active. But technology can actually help you in your 2015 resolutions of becoming a healthier you.

Let’s make this clear, I’m no tech expert. But I love my smart phone just as much as the next person and I depend on it to make life easier. If you’re the same then I’ll show you six apps that suppose to help you keep those “get healthy” resolutions on track. I tested a few and here’s what I found.

The first few apps are for those people who are looking for a reliable workout buddy/trainer/coach.

The first is Runtastic Pedometer. It’s a free app in both i-tunes and the Google play store. This app is one of the top rated apps when it comes to measuring the number of steps you take in a day.  A healthy active person should make – at minimum- ten thousand steps per day.  So with the help of the Runtatstic App, you’ll know how much you are actually moving and if you need to be moving around more during your day. The challenge I found on this app was that I have to remember to take your phone with your everywhere.

The second if you want to get in some real exercise. Ladies, you need to download Nike Training club App. It’s free for both apple and android users. This app has custom workouts made by Nike professionals that you can do at home or at the gym. The routines vary in intensity, length of time and even specific focus on different body parts. You can earn rewards to stay motivated and earn new workouts for you to choose from. It even has video tutorials for proper technique. So it’s like your own traveling personal trainer on your device.

The main con of Nike Training app is that it’s a space hog. So you may need to clear some space on your device before you download.

Guys, I haven’t tested it for myself but the Men’s Health Fitness Trainer app is a essentially the male version of this app. Also free on android and apple.

Now if your goal is to be healthier you in 2015, then exercise is important, but just as much as good eating habits. There are many healthy recipe apps that you can download and it’s really dependent on the type of food you like. So my suggested app for healthy eating is Fooducate. Fooducate is an app that educates you on healthy the food is that you’re eating. It can track your calories and dietary needs but the best part of this app is that you can search or use the bar code on the purchased food to find out how healthy it really is. So you’ll find out if the granola bar you bought is really the healthiest option for you. And lucky for us, it’s free in both i-tunes and the Google play store. The down side is that Fooducate will not tell you the health benefits of rice and beans or cow foot soup but at least you know what’s in your processed food.

There are also some great tracking apps, so you can know just how you are doing with both diet and exercise. My fitness pal is one of the top rated apps. It’s simple, easy to use and even syncs with other exercise apps to monitor your activity level. You input your goal, and it tells you how many calories you should consume and how much you should be burning. It sends reminders to log your info. And that would be the challenge with my fitness pal, committing to input your data each day but remember New Year – new you. So it should be worth the effort and the app is free on all platforms.

Then there’s stick. If you are really serious about reaching your fitness goal. I mean so serious that you’re willing to bet money on it. Then StickK is for you. StickK is to help you stick to your goals, weight loss, save more…whatever your goal is. You literally put money on your goal and where you’d want that money to go if you do not reach your goal – like not lose ten pounds by summer – then the money will paid money to a charity, a friend – whoever or wherever you decide.  Talk about motivation! Downloading StickK on your device is free – not meeting your goals though – that’s going to cost you.

The last featured app, is just a bonus. If you’re working on a healthy diet, and active body, then why not an active mind? Elevate is a brain trainer app. It uses activities – like games – to fine-tune your clarity, memory, processing, focus, and comprehension – make you sharper for 2015.

And there you have it; these are just a sample of the apps available to help you with your resolution. Just remember, that none of these apps will actually do the work for you – you still have to put in the effort for the changes you want.
