What’s the Latest on Belize City Road Works?

Darrell Bradley

The purpose of today’s press briefing by Mayor Darrell Bradley was really to outline several matters for which the general public wanted answers. Sanitation—contractors and workers aside—Mayor Bradley also spoke on the municipal bond and infrastructure works. The council has concreted approximately one hundred and forty of the five hundred plus city streets. But some thoroughfares have not held up to the weather conditions. The mayor accepted that streets and drainage issues continue to haunt him and that assessments and remedial works are currently underway on several streets in the city.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“We are immediately trying to respond primarily with the asphalting of some streets and then the asphalting of significant potholes. We are working on major streets—I am hoping to have a listing this afternoon, but I couldn’t get that information. But we are at least on ten or twelve streets where we are doing remedial work. Remember also that the rains are still with us so there has to be some rationalization with us doing that. We cannot carry out these works and then two days later a significant amount of rains happens and then we have to do them again. So we are looking at the situation very closely. We have an assessment going on and we are receiving reports as it relates to the condition as it relates to at least for some of our worst streets and we are ensuring that we can deploy workers and do remedial work as soon as possible. Many of these new BML workers will immediately go into the clearing of some of our inundated drains. We noticed that there is perennial problem in front of the ITVET—we’ve cleaned that on several occasions—I’ve discussed this several times with our sanitation managers. And so many of these new employees will immediately work on alleviating some of the drainage conditions particularly in streets that did not receive the cementing work. In addition to that we are continuing our cementing of streets in Belize City. We currently have about six streets going on: Blue Marlin Boulevard, we are doing a section of St. Joseph Street, we are doing Cleghorn Street, we are doing Slaughterhouse Road. We finished the entire length of Vernon Street up to the George Price Highway. All of these things are seeing significant improvement in the road driving and riding and walking quality of our city streets. And the cemented streets, while I will concede that there are one or two difficulties in relation to degradation on some of the cemented streets, by and large, ninety-eight percent of our cemented streets are holding out quite firmly.”
