2 Detained For New Year’s Violence

But back to Orange Walk…The murder of fifty-one-year-old Miguel Medina was the start of a rash of violence in that municipality. Just after midday on New Year’s Day, police were called to the residence of Orlando Baiza on Baker’s Street in Orange Walk town. Baiza had reportedly took out his licensed firearm and fired a single shot at twenty-eight year old Jose Luis Sosa, a Belizean Maintenance Worker of San Lorenzo Housing Site, who arrived at the property and allegedly began attacking persons with a piece of lumber. In an alleged act of self-defense, Sosa was shot to the left foot. Deputy Officer Commanding Orange Walk Police, Assistant Superintendent Selvyn Tillett, says both men have since been detained.

“Investigation reveals that Sosa had attacked several persons with a piece of two-by-four lumber. When asked to stop, he picked up a piece of steal—measuring about three feet—and attacked Mister Baiza who in turn pulled his licensed shotgun and shot Sosa on his left foot.”

“Has either of them been charged so far?”

ASP Selvyn Tillett

“Police are investigating at this moment so we haven’t laid no charges on anybody at this moment.”

Duane Moody

“And both of them are detained.”

ASP Selvyn Tillett

“Yeah.”
