Gilroy Usher Protests in Port Loyola

A peaceful protest by residents of Port Loyola, avid supporters of P.U.P. Standard Bearer Gilroy Usher Senior, ended in a brief squabble with area representative Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez this morning.  Both men traded insults at length, much of which provided comic relief for onlookers in the area.  The demonstration, organized by the two-time political aspirant, was about poor housing conditions which residents of the constituency are being subjected to under the Minister responsible for Poverty Alleviation.  With a throng of followers, including Collet standard bearer Yasmin Shoman, Usher paraded down Jane Usher Boulevard chanting and demanding change.  Martinez and Usher later got into a heated exchange over everything from election losses to failed private ventures. The protesters clamored for  better housing.

“This demonstration today is not an overnight tact. It is a result of almost 7 years of frustration with government’s failure to address the basic need of our people for proper housing. In this demonstration we are joining hands and hearts to let Boots Martinez and the U.D.P. know enough is enough. We will no longer suffer quietly in inadequate housing across Port Loyola and the other divisions of Belize City. My Belizean brothers and sisters the shortage of jobs is one of the main reasons it is hard for the people of Port Loyola to get out of inadequate housing and poverty. The young men and women, the single mothers, the high school graduates are all ready to work to provide for their families but the government had failed in providing our people with necessary jobs. The government therefore has a duty to provide proper low income houses for those who really need such assistance. Today we are being forced to live in slum housing, not because our country does not have but because of massive corruption in government and its unconcern about the welfare of the Belizean people. Despite millions of dollars for home restoration the majority of those persons affected by that storm has not received any assistance. If tax payers money is good enough to build over a dozen large yellow concrete houses for Boots over Belize City. Tax payers money is also good to build proper low income houses for the people of Port Loyola.”

Poverty. Poverty is the result of individuals who are unable or unwilling to fend for themselves. The responsibility to provide jobs should not only depend on government (tax payers). Belize has this colonial mentality that master must provide home shelter and food. Politicians don’t help this mentality when they dole out freebies for votes. Why should hardworking taxpayers subsidize homes for those who are not motivated to earn their own keep. If people don’t want to live in brukdown houses, they should find a way to get out of poverty. Survival of the fittest. The elimination of total poverty is unrealistic and will never end. People should be held responsible for their own lot in life. As the population grows and the world becomes mechanized and computerized, the value of unskilled labor is irrelevant. This is a worldwide phenomenon not just in Belize. Everybody is bawling for a job. The world cannot sustain its population. People are living longer, mechanized farming makes food abundant; Belize produces and exports nothing except sugar. we are a consumer nation looking for handouts and the politicians use this for our votes. People stop begging, poor people suck.
