Nunez Speaks on Theme of Disability Week

As a person living with a disability, Nunez spoke on the theme for this year’s celebration…that is, “Sustainable Development; the Promise of Technology.” He says that disabled persons have equal rights. Nunez explained that while some can be born with a disability, it can also be acquired as a result of an illness, crime or accident.

Marshall Nunez, President, Belize Assembly of Persons with Diverse Abilities (BAPDA)

“The abilities that people with diverse abilities have, I believe that there is an inferiority complex for people with disability because of stigma, we want them to break that cycle and to bring the gap between people with disabilities and those who are able. As I said earlier, people who are able are only one illness or accident away from a disability. It is alarming Duane to note that we have for BAPDA; we have three hundred and twenty-five members. Half of our members have multiple siblings with disabilities. If you have that to what we have, quickly it’s about five hundred people associated with our association…and that is just Belize City. This is just an anecdotal census…when we go to the rest of the nation; we are looking at a minimum of three thousand five hundred people with disabilities. And people are becoming disabled as a consequence of road traffic accidents, of gunshots, people are being amputated for illnesses related to diabetes. So it is important that there be an integration between disabled and able people. Sustainable Development; the Promise of Technology.” For people to continue to exist and be as independent as they are with the disability that they have, technology will drive them. Every device that people will diverse ability use is important for enhancing what they do. There are replacement, assistive devices. Prosthetic leg is a replacement device, the wheelchair is an assistive device, the eyeglass is an enhancement device, and as I said, the technology as it continues to evolve makes life even more integrating and easier for people with diverse ability to cope.”
