RTA Victim Yanie Cu Receives Assistance

In August, Benque resident Yanie Cu was badly injured in a collision with a government vehicle being driven by Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura. In October, News Five ran the story of Cu, who had gotten surgery in Guatemala but was still in terrible pain, unable to walk and further crippled by mounting medical costs. One week after Prime Minister Dean Barrow committed to helping Cu with those expenses. So today we checked for an update. Via phone, C.E.O. Lovell told us that he dispatched the Police to investigate and determine exactly the quantum of those expenses. He received that report today, and it seems to be all good news for Cu. There’s nothing that can be done about what he has suffered and the pain which will remain with him for months, but at least the family will not be crippled by the cost of medication and care, since insurance has stepped in smartly.

“I received a written letter from the Commissioner of Police which was subject medical expenses incurred by Yanie Cu. What he mentioned in his memo is that a total of forty-one thousand four hundred and thirty-two dollars and fifteen cents Belize are in fact the expenses that was brought to their attention by Yanie Cu and his wife. And that to date, through the assistance of Superintendent of Police Simeon Avila, the Atlantic Insurance Limited had issued to Yanie Cu and his wife, a total of thirty-nine thousand nine hundred and eighty-three dollars and seventy-seven cents, which would suggest that just over a thousand dollars would seem to be the amount of expenses that Yanie Cu and his wife still have not received monies for. Like I said, I just received this today and my intention was to have this sent to the Prime Minister to look at and to decided additional monies, if any, he will provide for Mister Yanie Cu. I am saying this because from what I am seeing here from the document that is being provided to me is that the Atlantic Insurance Company, as soon as a bill is provided to them, they make out a cheque and issue to the family.”

All this information will be sent to the Prime Minister to determine the next move, which hopefully will be to offer further assistance for any bills not covered by insurance in the immediate future.
