Tribunal Begins in Case of Alleged Police Brutality

Grace Flowers

In early September, an allegation was made by a popular Justice of the Peace, Grace Flowers of Belize City, that her nephew, Armani Bailey, was picked up by a group of police officers and taken to mile four on the George Price Highway. There, the cops allegedly beat up Bailey and attempted to drown him in a garbage bin. Flowers also claims that the cops threatened to shoot the nineteen year old youth. Following a report made to the Professional Standards Branch, a tribunal started today at the Raccoon Street Police Station where two witnesses gave testimony. Flowers was to testify, but did not. We caught up with her following the adjournment of the tribunal.

Grace Flowers, Justice of the Peace

“Police brutality. The police dehn mi take mi nephew up dah four miles and beat ahn, put ahn ina the garbage can and what happen the trial started today. But as far as this, only my nephew got to testify. They adjourned it until Thursday. So that is all for now.”

Duane Moody

“You are to testify in this incident. Tell us about what you have to say on this.”

Grace Flowers

“I want to tell the public don’t be afraid when the police beat anybody for them. They must go and report it because as far as I see, I think we will get something out of it. Mister Rivero is pushing very hard for us and we need to stop it. So as I say, if you have a problem with the police and you get abused, go and report it.”

Duane Moody

“Do you think there is any sort of cover up happening or anything like that?”

Grace Flowers

“As far as I see right now, I don’t think they are covering up. They are dealing with the problem, but I just hope we get justice.”

Duane Moody

“What will be the next step if in fact after this tribunal happens; you guys still don’t get the justice that you think you deserve?”

Grace Flowers

“Well we will go further with a civil suit because we won’t leave it at that. We are trying to set an example because we must not sit back and let the police chance yo. As I say, I don’t have a problem with police officers but they need to do their jobs the proper way.”
