9 Persons Charged for Drug trafficking

Austin Grant

Nine persons, including a sixty-six year old resident, along with his fifteen year old grandson, were hanging out at the home of the elderly man on Gentle Avenue, Belize City, when they were detained by the police. This morning, all members of the group were charged with Drug Trafficking. Arthur Smith, his underage grandson, along with nineteen-year-old Tarique Grant, his mother, thirty-eight year old Patricia Grant, fifty-one year old Austin Grant, nineteen year-old Aaron Cruz, twenty-year-old Michael Graham, twenty-two year-old Jason Gentle, and thirty-two old Steve Lucas, were taken to the Magistrate Court . Allegations are that on Saturday, November first, police searched Smith’s house and allegedly found a bag of weed containing a small quantity of weed.

In the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser, Smith wasted no time and pleaded guilty to Possession, but not guilty to Drug Trafficking. Smith, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty telling the court that he uses the marijuana for a spinal cord injury and for pain.  And while he wanted to take the responsibility for the weed, the Senior Magistrate explained to him that the prosecutor is in no position to say if Smith’s guilty plea for possession was acceptable.  Prosecutor Carmen Selgado asked the court for time to make checks so the nine persons were given bail in the sum of three thousand dollars and the case was adjourned for December nineteenth. When we checked this afternoon, none of the accused had been able to meet bail and remain in police custody.

  1. Mark Smith says:

This is a waste of police, the court and people of Belize time. The police including the GSU spend precious time and resources on weed instead of going after all the cocaine and meth in Belize. This trick is old. Wish the the person who wrote article would have been more specific than writing “found a bag of weed containing a small quantity of weed” What exactly is a small quantity of weed?
