Boxing, Basketball and Cycling in Sports Monday

Good Evening, I am James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.


Let’s jump in quickly to the Belize City High School Basketball Torunament so we head to Bird’s Isle where on Saturday night Nazarene High took on Maud Williams High School. Ajahn Williams comes down court and dials the bank fro a big time 3-point launch that keeps Nazarene High with a 7-point lead. At the other end, Selvin McDonald goes all the way through traffic to hit 2 of his 121 pts for Maud Williams. Nevertheless, Chervin Tench comes right back to answer with this jumper just outside the paint but at the end half, his team still trails Nazarene High 18 to 23.

In the 3rd quarter, Tench comes up with this steal to find Kenard White who goes glass for 2 of his 9 game pts. Now meet Kenroy McKoy—he has game as he demonstrates as he slices his way through the Nazarene defense for 2 and would lead all players with a game high 15 pts. Here’s another look at McKoy who displays his jump hook as Maud Williams continue to surge. And then this nice pass from Kobe Dyer finds Jamal Perry who makes it a 33-36 score going into the 4th quarter. With 3 minutes to go Amin Ramos gives Maud Williams its first lead of the ballgame and would finish with 8 points. However, Kenard White comes right back with the left hand to regain the lead for Nazarene. Keenan Castillo gets this look shot fall but Nazarene High School nevertheless hangs on to the 45-43 big Win and we say congratulations.

In football news, action in the Belikin Cup over the weekend saw Texmar Assassins blank Paradise Freedom Fighters 3-zip, Police United and Verdes FC battled to a 2-all draw, the B.D.F. blanked San Ignacio 3-zip, and FC Belize edged Wagiya 1-nil. Looking ahead, this Wednesday, at the People’s Stadium brings up the back match between FC Belize and Verdes. On Saturday, Belmopan Bandits will host San Ignacio United while on Sunday B.D.F. will face Police United at the People’s Stadium. FC Belize will host Placencia Assassins, Verdes FC will be inside the Norman Broaster Stadium against Paradise Freedom Fighters. All Sunday matches kick off at 3:30 p.m.

In boxing news, amateur action at the Cayo Welcome Center on Satuday saw Mervin Choto of the blue corner edge out Victor Sanchez. Jace Acosta of the red corner edged Anzel Cu in a close one. Ismael Guerra of the red corner, fighting out of Cayo, got the resounding win over Ruben Vacolbier of Belize City. Edwardo Garcia of Ladyville of the Blue corner got the win over Deon Gongora of Dangriga. Jael Ottley of Belize City fighting out of the blue corner beat Lewis Carter of San Pedro. Meanwhile, crows favorite Andy Dominguez of Cayo simply overpowered Devon Tucker of Ladyville who fell victim of technical knockout.

And in the main event, Omir Sandino formerly of Nicaragua, now fighting out of Belize, was impressive against the Guatemalan, Ilsias Edwardo Esquivel in the blue pants. In the meantime, look out for an international amateur card from the Leopold Smart Boxing Gym in Belize City; tentatively set for November 30th.

Turning to the cycling scene, the UWI Open Campus Barbara Cleland Day of Races comes up this Sunday at the Marine Parade here in Belize City. This year, the event will be highlighted by the students who participated in the cycling federation’s summer program….but all primary, secondary and tertiary students are invited to participate. Meanwhile, anyone who things they can cut it is welcome. So make it a family day this Sunday, November 9th from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshments and food will be available.

In Weekend Warrior News, Shelton Graham of Santino’s posted the new record for the A Class 40 mile race presented yesterday with a time of 1 hr. 38 mins 50 secs. Teammate, Warren Coye was 2nd and Wilbert Jones of Megabytes 3rd. Santino Castillo and Jim Scott of Santino recorded 1 hr. 46 mins 5 secds to finish 1st and 2nd respectively while Ryan Willoughby of Stationery House/Medina’s finished 2nd and 3rd respective. Meanwhile, Lawrence Craigh of Truckers Posse won the 30 mile C Class ride in 1 hr. 32 mins. 1 sec; Glen Sheppard of Big Blade pulled up 2nd and Sheldon Arnold also of Big Blade placed 3rd.
