Chamber Wants Belizeans Out of the Zone during the Christmas Season

While tourism numbers are high the private sector is calling on the government to reduce local visitors to the Commercial Free-zone. The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry has written Prime Minister Dean Barrow asking that the Corozal Free Zone to discontinue local excursions into the shopping district during the Christmas season.  Every year thousands of shoppers flock to the CFZ in search of deals that are more competitive than the local market.  According to the chamber, the practice has caused a loss in revenue to government, as well as the business community at a crucial time of year when business depend greatly on sales.  The chamber also believes that opening the free zone to the Belizean public has caused severe negative impact on local producers and businesses which, as a result of taxes, cannot compete with the free zone.

KEEP THE MINISTERS AND THE POLICE OUT TOO. BUT OF COURSE THEY HAVE GREEN LIGHT TO GO SHOPPING THERE. THAT GOES FOR THE CUSTOM AND INMIGRATION ALSO. VOTE PUP AND KICK THEIR A&& OUT.

  2. Steve D says:

The Zone was originally set up to capture $ from foreigners & from those Belizeans who were leaving the country. Why we have gotten to the point where people think it is their God given right to be there defeats the entire purpose it was originally set up for

  3. Ricky Malthus says:

Belize Chamber of Commerce, not known for rational economic thinking, has once again displayed stupidity to tell the government to restrict the people’s movement at Christmas time to ensure that they will shop in Belize City. But that logic is flawed as well as implausible. The people will decide where they want to shop and no dictates by the chamber or the government will prevent this this natural instinct to make their own choices.

How so ASININE to stop locals from traversing in their own land when allowing GUATS to kill off our security forces…the PM had better tell the BCOC to back off when it comes to basic birth-right human rights violations…BELIZEANS FIRST AND FOREMOST…

  5. Al says:

If the local businesses would pay workers “LIVING” wages, they would also encourage them to buy locally. There is a reason why we belizeans have to go elsewhere to stretch our dollars. Plus, even people from the chamber go there and buy too. Just a set of hypocrites.
