Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Up This Year

Kim Bautista

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is on the rise in Belize in 2014.  Earlier this week, the Ministry of Health held a press conference during which Chief Operations Officer of the Vector Control Unit Kim Bautista announced that while there have been no fatalities so far, there has been a spike in the number of diagnosed cases of dengue.

Kim Bautista, Chief Operations Officer, Vector Control Unit

“The cumulative number is five percent less the alarming figure is in terms of hemorrhagic dengue fever which we tend to see outbreaks every two to three years. The last recorded outbreak of dengue was in 2010 back then YOU had two hundred and ninety three hemorrhagic cases in 2010. So far we have seen 109 so that was 2010 to this point so if you compare to last year we only had sixteen so we are looking at a eighty-five percent increase over the past year. So that is the alarming figure in terms of the hemorrhagic cases and that is attributed to the cycle of the sever types circulated in the Central America due to that two to three year period. So it is almost like a cycle that you could time it the next two three year we can see an increase in hemorrhagic cases. But in terms of dengue cases cumulative cases it’s been right on track as to last year and the year before. In terms of the zone to answer your question, those sanitary zones remain under surveillance year in year out and those are only I would say at least seventy person of the cases would come from those zones. No fatalities this year, I believe that the particular type that is currently being circulated is not resulting in severe cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever so no sever cases reported as yet.”
