Two Men Arraigned for Separate Murders in the Toledo District

Simeon Alvarez

Two men were formally arraigned for murder this morning at the Punta Gorda Magistrate’s Court. Although the charges were just laid, the murders go back some time. Twenty-one year old Kenner Gomez will face justice for the murder of twenty-six year old Janice Floris Vargas, which occurred on Mother’s Day, exactly five months ago. Additionally, twenty-four year old Miguel Choco will be tried for the brutal murder of sixty-one year old Agripina Coc which occurred on August thirtieth in the village of San Pedro, Columbia.

Supt. Simeon Alvarez, O.C., Punta Gorda

“Kenner Gomez, twenty-one year of a Cemetery Road address was formally arrested and charged yesterday for the crime of murder. This is as a result of the death of Janice Vargas, twenty-sixth years old which occurred on the eleventh of May at the Jamaica Bar in Punta Gorda Town. He had pleaded guilty sometime in May after he was arrested and charged for the suspected firearm that he used in the killing of Vargas. He was arrested for that; he pleaded guilty, was convicted and was sentenced to five years in prison. So he is spending a five-year term at this time. Miguel Choco, he is also at the Central Prison spending a six months for a crime that he committed on the strength of a committal warrant and he was arrested and charged yesterday for the crime of murder committed upon sixty-one year old Agripina Coc from the village of Columbia.”

“O.C., could you…I’ve heard some people say that there has been some speculation as to the length of time between these murders and these persons being charged. Could you give us a reason for that?”

Supt. Simeon Alvarez

“There is no reason for that. What happen is that when it comes to murder, it is a timely investigation to get all the evidence together before we can arrest and charge. We don’t want to just charge immediately after an offense is committed and there is no evidence. So we always try to make sure that we have sufficient evidence before we make an arrest especially for murder.”

Superintendent Simeon Alvarez today told News Five that they are confident they have the men who committed those murders, since both of the accused confessed to the crimes.
