Minister of Immigration Clueless on Workers’ Status

The news that a Guatemalan company with Guatemalan employees was building a Coast Guard facility on Hunting Caye broke last week Thursday. One week later, the Government says it still has no clue about the status of the workers at that facility. Minister of Immigration and Labour Godwin Hulse today told News Five that he heard about it in the House. He has still been unable to find out when or how those Guatemalan workers entered the country. And since he doesn’t know how they got here, or even that they WERE here, Hulse also doesn’t know about their work status. We know that the wheels of government grind slowly, but you’d probably have thought that with so incendiary a concern, government would have some answers by now. Well, Hulse didn’t, but said that as soon as he know, we will.

“When it came to my attention I immediately summoned our C.E.O. and Director of both Immigration and Labour to dispatch a team down there to give me a full-fledged report on what happened. Let me make it categorically clear – the contract is one thing, but who you employ is another. Nobody can work in Belize who is not a Belizean without a work permit. That is the law and we’re going to uphold it and nobody can enter Belize without a proper immigration status. That’s the law and we’re going to uphold it. It doesn’t matter who gave contract and from whom and who’s paying. That’s the position. But before we can make a final statement we have to know what their status is and what they’re doing here and how and that sort of thing.”

“Are you disappointed that the information wasn’t brought to your attention prior to it being brought up in the House?”

Godwin Hulse

“Of course! We all should have known. It is one government so whatever happens we all should know. There’s no excuse for that and no reason why we didn’t know. But like I said as quickly as I found out we have dispatched a team to do our work, and we will report to the media as soon as we are completed with that. And I will repeat again. Nobody will work in this country that doesn’t have the proper legal documents to do so.”

Reporter

“Sir, might it not have been that because the US Government has been so generous with Belize this issue with the Guatemalan contractor hasn’t been brought up with the government because the US Embassy has been so generous that we gave them the forbearance that they would work in the best interests of the country?”

Godwin Hulse

“I can’t answer that but the US knows and should know that you respect the laws of every country. You see how many times I repeat it? The laws of the country must be respected. You cannot work here without the proper permits and you cannot enter this country without the proper immigration documents, no matter who it is. Even at the highest international level, when Ministers travel and visit we are not allowed to enter any country. We have to have visas and we have to have everything in order and we are checked. And so that applies to each and every person.”

Hulse says that he is prepared to immediately expel the workers from the forward operating base on Hunting Caye if they do not have proper documentation. He also told News Five today that at least when he was present, the matter has not been discussed in Cabinet.

What do you know Hulse? Or, are you playing the Richard Pryor role now, “hear no evil, see no evil, know no evil?” John Saldivar has his own dirt and skeletons and he knew exactly what was going on. He’s too busy hustling public servants with the cell phone credits and is the middle of these immigration scandals. Then he puts his dumb dumb sister ,Candelera, in another post in Belmopan when we all know, even from I was a child, that she could hardly tell her left hand from her right hand. This government is so far gone that Dean doesn’t even know or can’t keep up with all of your hustles. Gapy has his own going on along with the Commissioner of Lands, where they have grabbed up a lot of land but it’s in someone else’s name or a company’s name. The hustle is that the lands go into someone else’s name and they get paid a couple thousand dollars to put the properties in their names and it remains that way as long as the commissioner keeps his job and Gapy is in power. If party changes, then they start the change of ownership process because now, they have nothing to lose. We need to have laws in place that state that public officers and government officials have to declare their assets pre election and during their tenure in these top positions. The problem with Cruffy, they scream for two minutes and the ministers and CEO’s feed them b.s. stories and we quickly forget. It seems as if the Penner, Saldivar, Kim, Hulse, Castro passport scandals have been swept under the rug. Try that in Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti or one of these other Caribbean islands and you’ll see what happens.

Very sad day for Belize coupled with a very serious leadership crisis. Imagine the possibilities, individuals are working in Belize and the Minister of labor and Immigration and member of the decision making cabinet hasn’t got a clue as to what is going on? Lawd have mercy this sounds so pathetic. Wat a competent bunch of buffoons. Wake up, Rise up Belizeans, change gotta come?

Why doesn’t Ch. 5 find Johnny Borland (or his deputy if he’s traveling), put a microphone in his face, and get a nice soundbite. He’s a little bit down the food chain, but his unabashed pro-americanism resonates, and he might be more complicit in this scheme than is apparent. Let’s see how well he talks with his pants down.

  5. Hatari says:

This man is clueless on everything. Just another bureaucrat. I would not believe anything he says.

  6. Caye says:

Jesus Christ…only in Belize. Who the heck are these idiots in government and what are they responsible for? This guy sounds like he is the member of a bunch of blind and dumb mice. Heck! the rest of us are smart enough to know that this is not the case, so they must be playing the darn fool.

  7. Peter Monteroso says:

THOUSANDS OF GUATEMALANS ARE HERE IN BELIZE LIVING A LUXURIOUS LIFE AND GOT IT FOR THE CAST OF ONE VOTE !!!!
THOUSANDS OF THEM BRIBE THEIR WAY THROUGH ALL OFFICES FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND DO ALL WORKS, CONSTRUCTION, DRIVING , BUSINESS , ETC. ETC.
ALL THAT MONEY IS GOING OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND THEY PAY NO TAX !!!
THEY ARE EVEN BOLD ENOUGH TO SAY “BELICE ES NUESTRO” , YES THOSE THAT ARE LIVING IN HERE IN BELIZE, NOT THE ONES THAT GO BACK AFTER WORK.
SO WE JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE NO HELP FROM THE MINISTER OF IMMIGRATION , HE KNOWS NOTHING… NOTHING, HELL ! WHERE HE LIVES?
BUT YOU BET IF ELECTION TIME WAS TOMORROW, THEY WIN AGAIN, BELIZE PEOPLE FOOL.
