Saldivar Says TPU Memo is being Investigated

John Saldivar

At the beginning of the year, on January twenty-fourth, the Commander of the Tourism Police Unit, ASP Diana Hall, wrote to the ministry outlining the dangers and risks that tourism police are facing at Caracol in the execution of their duties. ASP Hall cautioned that her officers are inadequately trained and equipped to deal with the Guatemalans.  She warned that “God Forbid that we do not lose one or more of our officers, and when we get a public outcry, we start to play the blame game as to who is responsible.” Today, when asked about this famous memo, Saldivar said that he is investigating why the memo stopped at the desk of the Commissioner of Police.

John Saldivar, Minister of National Security

“As far as I know, they have been put in place. The officers from tapir camp have been moved to Caracol.”

“Sir, why has a directive been given to the Commander of the B.D.F. not to speak on that? As the commander, he should be the one to say whether or not those measures are enough.”

John Saldivar

“I don’t know that a directive has been given for him not to speak on those matters. There are certain matters that are referred to the Ministry of National Security for comment, but that is as far as it goes.”

Reporter

“Sir, can we ask you on another topic…the memo from ASP Diana Hall on the TPU issues about the Caracol safety sent to the ministry and to higher ups in the police department from since January. Why is it that this was not addressed at the ministry level?”

John Saldivar

“It was sent to the Commissioner. We are still looking into that matter and as soon as we can conclude then we will be able to know more. What we know is that it was sent to the Commissioner of Police; it was not forwarded to the Ministry of National Security. Like I said, we are looking into the matter.”

Reporter

“Who precisely is looking into it?”

John Saldivar

“The Ministry of National Security is looking into the matter.”

Reporter

“Is it under investigation?”

John Saldivar

“Did I say investigation?”

Reporter

“You said looking into…”

John Saldivar

“We are looking into the matter. We’ve been told of a memo that has been sent to the Commissioner and it contains certain information in there and we are looking into the matter.”

Reporter

“How do you answer to those who say that the Commissioner of Police and the Police Department and your ministry on a whole have dropped the ball and that is the reason why Miser Conorquie was killed? He was just doing his duties and he wasn’t prepared properly for this particular location.”

John Saldivar

“I wouldn’t draw that conclusion and anything further, I would say that we are looking into the matter. We are looking into the matter to see what happened when the memo was sent to the commissioner and what was done about it. We are looking into that. we haven’t concluded anything at this time.”

Reporter

“Could he face any penalties for this?”

John Saldivar

“You are going too far man. We are looking into the matter.”

You look into what you want to John. I want you to look that family in the face and see what words you have for them for the loss of their son, grandson, brother and nephew. Word on the street here in the Big Apple that you bailed out a certain relative of yours earlier this year from a serious charge by calling the Belama police at 3 a.m. in the morning after he was caught with a teenager and the young lady and her parents brought up a charge on him which, I understand, went away. It went away due to yourself and the uncle of the relative who paid off the mother of the child. I won’t make any more statements so as not to reveal the identity of the young man and I also know the parents, who are good people. However, I will, if needs be, because I’m understanding that he is still let to run free, driving and drinking and, like yourself ,as I’ve heard from friends in Belmopan, it seems as if he can’t handle his alcohol and he gets bold and belligerent under the influence. Put yourself in this woman’s shoes and ask if you wanted this to happen to your daughter. That’s exactly why my child thinks I’m too tough on him. I cut him no slack. I punch the hell out his behind and also sit with him and teach him, counsel him and educate him about what’s out there. Our goal is always to have our offsprings not make the mistakes we made and to make life a little better for them.

This man is nothing more than a big bellied GOB bureaucrat with no experience in national security matters. A glorified clerk at best . . . but with political connections! When will we ever learn to put qualified professionals in these so very important positions. Oh yeah, politics!
