Foreign Minister Maintains Position on Conorquie Murder

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

Immediately following last Thursday’s murder of Conorquie, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington told the media that he was uncertain whether the shooting death of Special Constable Danny Conorquie was indeed perpetrated by Guatemalan bandits.  Despite the massive firestorm that followed his statement, Elrington remains firm in his position.  Today, he backed up his opinion by stating that while his foremost responsibility as foreign minister is to Belize and its people, he also has to consider the impact of his pronouncements on an international level.

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“I’m still not in a position to say because I don’t know and as the foreign minister I have a responsibility not only to Belize and the Government of Belize and the people of Belize, that’s where I have my first responsibility, we are now part of the interconnected world and so I have got to think in terms of the impact of what I say on the world at large.  Guatemala is not only our neighbor but they are also a very powerful neighbor and in all their relationship with us, as far as I am aware, since I am the foreign minister, they have always been polite and they have always tried to be proper in dealing at the foreign minister’s level.  I think that it is right that I take the same position too.  So I am not going to say anything that is unnecessary to be said and that can cause a bad situation to be even worse.  That is a not my approach and I don’t do knee-jerk.  When it comes to any incident I always give careful thought to it and I try to find the proper way of dealing with it.”

I mean to say, how weak and how apologetic can Sedi become? After all the goings on and now the recent development at camp Valentin, this man is still afraid to even say, that he believes it to be the Guatemalans that are responsible for Danny’s execution?
Sedi should not be allowed to hide behind that diplomatic hog wash, at the expense of Belizean lives, as he bends all the way backwards so as not to ruffle feathers.
It seems to me that with all the evidence notwithstanding, the Foreign Affairs Minister is the only one who does not believe that a Belizean security Officer was gunned down in cold blood, by a Guatemalan Intruder.
Why is he so dogmatic with his viewpoint? Is it out of fear, is it out of favor or is it downright incompetence?
Somebody needs to answer these questions and disabuse me, because this man di play simple!

Diplomatic buffoonery? perhaps with all of what has been said and done Belize will become Belice much sooner than many may think? UDP,s Guat. standard bearer/ contractor in Orange walk. 46 % Guats. population in the Belize prison system? Guats building important Coast Guard Station in Hunting Caye etc, etc, this is real diplomatic progress. Wake up, rise up Belizeans, learn Spanish for the future? Progressively you will need it to live in Belice de Guatemala?
