3 Police Officers Charged for Criminal Wrongdoings

On Wednesday, the Professional Standards Branch of the Belize Police Department told the media that there are at least seven officers currently under investigation, following allegations of criminal wrongdoings.  Among them are police constables Larry Sutherland and Wayne Trapp, who have been charged for the alleged physical abuse of nineteen-year-old Armanhni Bailey.  Bailey claims that on the afternoon of September sixth, he was detained by the officers and taken to an area off a dirt road along the George Price Highway and badly beaten before being thrown inside a dumpster.  Sutherland and Trapp have since been charged disciplinarily with a single count each of being “uncivil when on duty”, while Sutherland was additionally charged for one count of acting “to prejudice to good order and discipline.”  In a separate incident on Monday, Tramane Ciego also reported that a pair of officers approached him and proceeded to train a firearm in his direction, searched him and then physically assaulting him.

Ciego says he was kicked in the chest and his money, a total of four hundred and ninety dollars, was subsequently taken from him.  Police constables Edgar Depaz and Jefferson Dawson have been charged jointly with robbery and wounding, while Dawson was additionally charged with threatening words and aggravated assault.  At the end of the press conference, Assistant Superintendent Glen Rivero also reported that Police Constable Jamille Scott had been apprehended along with a female companion and will be charged for handling stolen goods.  The charge comes after a report that a search conducted at a residence on Antelope Street resulted in the theft of jewelry.
