A Guatemalan national was today arraigned for the death of a Santa Elena resident who was killed following a traffic accident on Tuesday. Eighty-three-year- old Oscar Perez Senior, a resident of Benque Viejo del Carmen had the book thrown at him earlier today after twenty-three-year-old Heber Flores of Trapiche area, Santa Elena died at the K.H.M.H. of head and body injuries sustained during the accident that occurred around two p.m. in Spanish Lookout. According to police, they were called out to a scene on Center Road Spanish Lookout Community, where in front of Western Dairies, a Meilun scooter driven at the time by Flores crashed into the side of a white Toyota pickup with Guatemala license plates. Investigation shows that Perez Sr. did not give way to incoming traffic and as he pulled on to Center Road, Flores collided into the pickup. Perez Senior received injuries to his left upper arm and back and complained of severe pain and was taken to the San Ignacio Hospital where he was treated and released. Flores on the other hand was not so lucky. He was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and then to the K.H.M.H., but died hours later. “Police visited the scene where they saw a white in color Toyota pickup with Guatemalan license plates which was being driven at the time by Mister Oscar Perez, an eighty-three year old of Guatemalan, but currently residing in Benque Viejo. Also at the scene, a motorcycle was seen in the middle of the road in front of Western Dairies. Initial investigation is that Mister Oscar Perez was coming out of Western Dairies compound and apparently did not stop to give way to incoming traffic causing the said motorcycle to crash into his vehicle in the passenger door of the pickup. We learned that the driver of the motorcycle is one Heber Flores, a twenty-three year old of Trapiche area, Santa Elena Town, who was flung from the motorcycle at the time of the accident causing his head to hit on the glass and upper part of the door of the white pickup. The impact caused him to received serious head injuries and was unconscious when he was rushed to Belmopan for treatment and later to K.H.M.H. where he succumbed to his injuries. This morning sometime after nine when he came to the station for him to be present for an inspection of his vehicle, he was informed of the death of Mister Flores. As a result and because the investigation shows that he was at fault, he was served with the charge of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, Failure to give way when changing direction and Drove Motor Vehicle Without Due Care and Attention. He was arraigned at San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court and bail was granted to him.”
