Thousands participate in Jouvert 2014

Just before dawn on Saturday, a massive crowd gathered in the area of the Belcan Bridge for Jouvert. The event has grown by leaps and bounds and this year, the event was certainly the biggest in its history. Duane Moody was there for the event.

There were several pre-carnival bashes happening across the city, but by three-thirty a.m., all those partygoers as well as revelers from various carnival bands and families gathered at San Cas Plaza at the foot of the BelCan Bridge. The annual Jouvert was in full swing and ready to hit the road as a prelude to the 2014 Carnival Road March. This tradition was adopted from the Caribbean and would see the spirit of the carnival expressed among the gathering that would take cooked clay and plaster it on their bodies before dancing through the streets.

Kendra Buller, Carnival Committee

Kendra Buller

“Jouvert really in the Caribbean really is about the revelers getting up early in the morning saying it is carnival morning—let’s unite, let’s have fun. And so it was originally from the Caribbean, we adopted it from them. And then we have Miss Marsha the mud lady. She is the one who decided on baking all the mud, getting everything prepared and so when we first started about Jouvert, we had no idea that this would be the crowd that we’d have at this time. Actually it is even bigger than those who danced carnival because it is people who don’t really want to put on a costume, but want to experience like a mini carnival, so they do the mud early in the morning. It is really, really fun.”

The Jouvert was without a doubt the biggest that has ever been organized by the Carnival Committee. Over a thousand persons, gyrating to the sound of various trucks paraded through the City Streets making their way to the end at Marine Parade. This year, the Jouvert had a record total of five sections: Lakers, Mud, Wet Fet, Madd Squad and the Coco Devils.

“The crowd is getting bigger and better; it is not even four o’clock yet and the crowd is out here, everybody already hyped up. So we are about to have a blast again this year Jouvert as what we expect anyway.”

Duane Moody

“Now this year we can see that there are five different sections as opposed to the previous years. Are you expecting that the numbers are going to be bigger than last year?

Kendra Buller

“I think the numbers will. We have indeed five sections: we have the Wet Fete, they are coming right now from the ITVET; we have coco devils which is the chocolate; we have paint and powder, we have water, we have oil and then we have the general mud. And I think more and more people are coming out because someone brings them along who had fun last year. So the crowd is anticipated to be much bigger.”

People all ages and sizes participated in the Jouvert; it is a breath-taking experience for many. One familiar face that we were able to pick out from the crowd was Shari Williams. It’s her third experience consecutively.

Shari Williams, Participant, Jouvert

Shari Williams

“Duane, it has been absolutely fabulous. I did it about three years ago and since then, yo can’t get me to stop. This is the one event I look forward to every single year and it is only getting bigger and bigger. I’ve danced with every single truck. I’ve gotten mud, powder, paint, water, chocolate—you name it, I got it.”

Duane Moody

“You think it is something for everyone to come out and do given that it is safe?”

Shari Willaims

“Yes, definitely. If you’ve never experienced Jouvert, I’m telling you, you are missing out an event of a lifetime. You need to come out and experience what Jouvert is all about—fabulous, fantastic.”

It’s also an experience to share with friends….

Participant, Jouvert

“We dah proud Belizeans big man. The experience was turn up. It was too real. I neva finish all, but I finish most of it. Every year from I nine, I di do Jouvert. I put on mi shoes earlier and ih mi big fi me and by the finish of Jouvert, ih mi small fi mi. I noh know weh gone on but that dah weh happen.”

The Jouvert brought out a massive crowd and if that determines the success of the Carnival Road March, all I can say is “wi ready for the road!” Reporting for News Five, I am Duane Moody.
